my side stand makes me very nervous it doesn't seem to lock into position properly. It always looks like its going to roll off it, is this a common problem with the Heritage softail. Is there an easy fix for this.

Shit stand I reckon . Been a topic here before . I always park mine very carefully . If there,s a slight slope , have bike wanting to roll backwards , or in gear so can,t roll forwards .

Yeah I always keep in first but it still looks unstable, I thought maybe a stiffer spring or maybe notch a bit from the stand where it hits the stop. This was a problem on my busa and grinding a bit of the stand helped it. Didn't want to go down that path first but might have to.

SteveL is yours is an 07 (Same color as mine) If so you will find that when you lay the bike on the stand the stand will slide into a key way, The bike can't fall off because of that design.

The bike will slide forward a bit but that's all, it freaks me out sometimes when on a slope. My daughters partner has an 02 Heritage and his doesn't lock in. When his bike slides forward it keeps going... He has had a couple of close call when parking on a slope.

Just another annoying HD bit of engineering, I often wonder if its working when I put the stand down, nearly fell over once.

After that incident I always make sure when the stand is down that I push it forward and backward to make sure its engaged into the lock down position. Strange idea as the stand doesnt lock till the bike leans over, when it leans over it will then click and lock in the down position.

well i wish dynas had that lock in sidestand mechanism ,if u think ya softail models stand scares ya well dont buy a dyna coz then u will find wat scary sidestands are, even fully down at stop tab bike looks like is or is wrong coz stand is leanin backwards just a tad when  fully down ,most stupidest design and dyna stands dont lock in like yours you must make sure you can lean ya bike a tad more than you think  if you get off bike an not put ya foot an pull back to check if is at fully at stop you may be in 4 a shock ,dynas will fall over on stand coz can go forward no locking sidestand ,i ave an extension on my sidestand that allows to put down easier at parking an can catch stand with boot quicker if trys to spring back up also can hold stand with boot  wen gettin off ,now this is the most stupidist sidestand mechanism i av ever come across in any brand of bike ,people have broken thier legs because of this SHINGLES

thanks Tim, definitely took a bit of time getting used to the bike (and still am) so much different to the Jap bikes I have had in the past. From my perspective the Harley is much more of a riders bike, by that I mean you need to think a lot more about what you are doing and about to do. The Jap bikes are now just so easy to ride they almost become clinical and don't have the sole of a Harley. I know I am telling you guys nothing new but it is all new to me.
I feel sorry for you Shingles and other Dyna owners as it is a very uneasy feeling walking away from your pride and joy and not sure its going to be upright when you get back. I am surprised no after market company/suppliers have come up with a solution to the problem yet.

My 99 heritage does the same thing. I thought stand was rooted and bought a new one and replaced it. made no difference new stand moves the same as old one. Still cant get used to it. Feels like she is going to fall over every time you put stand down.

Hey Shingles ... I know what you mean ... I have 3 mates with Dyna`s and they are worse than mine like you say ... one of my mates and me swapped bikes awhile back for a bit of a comparison ride and when we stopped I couldn't even find the bloody side stand ... looked like a right goose I did ... every time my mate pulls up anywhere he has to reach down and use his hand to dig it out from under the primary , crazy .

Like Hmmm 2 says never park downhill ... not a nice look coming back and finding your pride and joy laying on the ground with fuel all over the place .

Steve L , I`m a bit the same as you ... while I do have past Harley experience , it was 30 odd years ago and have ridden Jap bikes ever since mainly Zed 9`s and recently a really comfortable Gsx 1400 ... but for what ever reason wether it is the Sole thing or just the feeling riding a Harley gives ya it is hard to not feel good while out on a nice day with your mates or missus or even by yourself ... as long as you pride and joy is running ok of course , Lol

Have fun mate learning and enjoying your new mode of transport ... Tim .

NAH max just goes to a welded lug on frame or stop tab depends wat ya wana call it,maybe they hav upgraded mechanism coz it surely was crap on my model ,we actually leaned over bike with a few guys an yep just a tab on frame no loking in like softails have ,maybe i can grind tab to make stand more foreward wen down ,i hav an extension on my stand or jiffystand as HD call it you can buy from HD as accessory is in parts book ,it allows you 2 find tip easyier wen pushing down with ya boot wen parking 6inches or more longer piece that attaches 2 standard sidestand no welding as is factory part ,still would like 2 grind bit off dat tab an let stand goe more forward ,jus need people 2 hold bike while i grind tab, ive never trusted that stand but make sure i park bike to minimise risk of falling SHINGLES

I have now got myself into a routine of checking it before getting off the bike, still feels weird trying to push the bike off the stand as it does roll forward a bit before it stops. But I am a lot more confident about the stand now.
