OIL CHANGE

g,day all, just done an oil change on my dyna, used the scavenger oil system as always no probs.

anyway like always i stock up in oil & filters ''mobil1'' inbetween services so its all there when needed.

got to the stage where i was ready to install the new filter, topped it up with oil ,looked closer and

around the rim of the filter looked abit suspect,  ''rusty...dirty'' .didnt think to much about it,but was in

the back of my mind the whole time.

so finished of checked oil level cleened up went for a ride ,and sure enough oil is leaking out from

    around the filter somewhere,cant tell 100% .

so my question is,to save me draining all the oil all over again, can i drill a hole in te filter as i did before

and let the oil drain out of the filter ,then top up anew filter and install it .

and by draining the filter in that way does any oil from the engine''top end''come out aswell.

long question i know ,but just want a bit of advise, hope you understand my question...

Pretty sure the oil is filtered after going through the motor so the oil pump actually has to push the oil through your filter, ie; shouldnt self drain. Wait for better info maybe, Im not 100% sure

Yes you will be able to drill out the filter to drain the oil. Still makes a mess though but not as much.

just spin off the old filter & put a new one on . it's no good drilling holes' in the steel if any shit get's  in the engine your stuffed, the oil is filtered before the oil goes into the motor, do not risk it  , i don't understand why you would drill a hole in the oil filter when it needs to be replaced anyway

thinking of drilling ahole in the filter first to drain all the oil out of the filter before taking it off

saving some mess,as ihave already changed the oil, anyway would only drill a small hole

and would think the oil would flush any swarf out....my theory any way.

definatley wont be using the oil that is draind out

As DR said just spin old one off and put new one on, the only oil there is what is in the filter. Drilling is pointless, make a drip tray out of alfoil. The only way more or excessive oil will come out is if you start the motor while the filter is off........which you wont!

i loosen the filter  1st then have the bike on the side stand ,  slide some newspaper under the filter & push it all the way up then quickly undo the filter  & bring out the paper with the filter , just be carefull of the crank censor ,  clean excess off with a clean rag
