Gidday Guys ... hopefully not to dumb a question ... in regards to the difference in Air-Fuel Ratios from stock and after fitting pipes and aircleaner and a remap .
I`ve recently fitted pipes and airfilter as well as some NightRider XIED Cables .. { Xtreme Inline Enrichment Device } .. the blurb with the XIED`s say that my standard setup would be running about a 14.6 to 1 Air to Fuel Ratio and with the XIED cables fitted then it would bring that ratio down to between 13.7 and 13.9 to 1 which of course richens up the fuel delivery hence making bike run more responsive and more cooler , which of course is a good thing and i can only state my experince and that is that my pride and joy feels heaps better to ride as oppossed to stock .
My Question is what type of ballpark ratio figure can i expect with a proper remap ... i of course realise that different tuners will deliver different results but was courious as to how much benifit there will be considering i don`t expect to do much more motor work for some time ... fingers crossed and the cables were only $113.00 and it`s unlikely i will get any decent kind of Tuner fitted and set up for much less than $600.00 and for items like the ThunderMax , well i have been qouted around $1100.00 .
Thanks guys for any response ... Tim .
Hi Tim,
The XIED cables do improve the A/F issues away from the stock tune. The 14.6:1 is the lower end of the stock scale. Most bikes I test with a stock map range from 14.6 to 15.8. Not too good for any engine! Most Harleys under full power like to run 13.0 to 13.2 and cruise around 13.5. The testing I have done with XIED cables will give you at best 13.7 but for most areas of the rev range and throttle positions I find the readings closer to 14.2. This is a common pattern I find with ALL tuning systems and maps generated in the USA. I have contact with tuners in the USA and we exchange map listings over A/F ratio readings. We always have very different map numbers to acheive the same A/F readings.
I recently imported a Dyna for a customer of mine built and tuned in California. The owner rode the bike for 1,600 Mls over there and the bike ran perfect and had heaps of power. When he rode the bike here in Victoria it was a mess. Very flat and under powerd. When we tested it on our Dyno the tune was all over the place. We tested with USA fuel and Aus fuel and there wasnt much difference. Certainly not what we were looking for. We fully remapped the SE Pro Tuner and the bike come alive, Both on the Dyno and on the road. Unfortunately there isnt a cheap way to have your bike running perfect. But with a really good custom map you will save the money in years to come by not having to pay for repairs caused by incorrect tunes.
Cheers Brian.

Sorry for the "late" reply but I had a left knee recon last Thursday , knocked me about a wee bit that !!
I think i originally reccomended the IED's to you ? I still think they're the "best bang for the buck" as you are experiencing. I no longer use them myself personally , as I'm now a TTS convert on my own bikes, (and those of many other dudes ) but I have fitted XIED's as recently a 4/5 months ago to a mate's new 2013 Roadking. He's delighted for the money spent and won't be making any more changes I liked the "original" SERT , sold by HD up until 2008 , ( which has become the TTS in the aftermarket ) . No drama operation.
I try to set the AFR to low 14;1's on "cruise" and low to high 13's on acceleration Power Commander(s) and Thundermax(es) I've personally seen give trouble once 4/5/6 years old and I have "switched" those guys to SERT or TTS Copied from EBT , ( hope he don't mind ?)
