    Hey guys,

I'm looking to install a small Lithium Ion battery into my bike. The sales rep told me that it would be fine to use as long as it charge rate is between 13.6-14.7v maxium at no more than 24amps.

Has anyone used one a lithium ion battery????

Also as my bike is being rebuilt and I cant check ,does anyone know what the output is of a 73 sportie generator with a regulator??? Amps and Volts???

    Cheers Goldy

There is 2 main ones I'm looking at. there is the SSB lithium around $300 and Shorai $500.

After speaking to the two dealers, the SSB has an in built battery management system to protect it. But I dont know anyone who has one. The Shorai is the one regarding the charging rates in my first post and a guy a work has run one for years in his dirt bike and will put one in his harley when the current one shits itself.

I dont know what my charge rate is and as my bike is in pieces and I cant test it. It just the old 1000cc sportie with the generator and regulator. some of my questions might sound a little silly but I know nothing of electrical systems.

The main reason I'm doing this is I'm looking for something more powerful than the standard battery the bike was running (Deka I think) but I'm short on space.

the old sporty charge rate @ about 13.5 to 14.5 volt's  i do not know the amp hr  but they had the same sort of battery as the big twin depend's on the model year  & the reg used 1967 to 1978 electric start  XLH models had a 32 amp big battery same as the shovel FLH, then in 1979 they ran a solid state reg  with the 18 amp battery same as the softails,

@Daddyracer - Thanks for that. that fits right in there range.

@Kiwidave - Yeah thats all I could find.

Shorai list a lithium for the 73 XLH but dont mention anything about if its a generator or altinator type.

I might go with the Shorai Lithium Ion LFX36L3-BS12
    Its a 12v, 36A/Hr, 540CCA and weights just 2.1kg. Its 155H x 166W x 88D

i would use a 1978 to 83 solid state type reg  as the old style mechanical type reg do not last & are a hassle

     Interesting thread,

Not having ever looked into lithium batteries except small stuff on tools, im wondering what cost verses life span and what advatage they might hold, I ask this as last harley oem battery lasted 5 years and still going strong but I replaced with another oem battery cause i though at that age, murphys law might kick in and it would shit itself away from home, new softail battery was $168. And I felt 5 years was a good run on a bike ridden allmost daily.

Just wondering how they compare to lithium ion batteries on power tools, My lithium battery tools operate at full output and then die quickly. But the older non lithium batteries run down like a car battery that trying to start a car that wont start, So the lithium batteries run at full output for longer but died in seconds. Be interested in larger bike lithiums performance from someone thats got one as compared to oem battery.

On lead acid batteries you do know when battery starts to near its life cycle cause you notice a bit of decrease in cranking power and bike might have to crank a little longer but im wondering how lithium copare to that as well.

    re to that.

    cheers

New research to the lithium-ion batteries used in electric and hybrid vehicles may produce a battery that yields an extended range for the motorist, as well as getting rid of the fire risks associated with the batteries currently getting used. The secret, says the report, is in trading out the liquid electrolytes for an innovative solid form. Article resource: are indian payday loans legal in maryland
