I think everyone should start of with a motorcycle licence first, would get a better perspective.

Here's how I got my bike license

1981 Turned up to the Singleton NSW cop shop after having my 'L's for a week

Cop walked out to the footpath with me, at the same time telling me what to do.

'Ride 50 meters up the road to that intersection, turn around and come back pass me to that intersection, a further 50 meters back the other way, turn around and come back'

So off I went up the road, turned around and he was gone, back in the station. So I pulled up, went inside the cop shop and he said 'sign here' That was it.

    Very easy

I got mine in about 1986 and the Motor Registry bloke told me to ride around the block...when I got back he was sitting on a bench reading the paper.....Those were the days hey...lol....now HB is getting her license and i cant believe how much she has to learn....Course after course.....even the L test she failed and has been driving for a long time......i think since you had to crank start cars.....OUCH.......so i think maybe its a good thing now......but hey...im glad mine was so easy....

When i did mine (not that long ago) 7 years . This larger fellow had never been on a bike before not even the dirt, was asked to get on a scooter just to get the feel of it at first, then they would get him on the vtr250 . Well we were going around the circut and low and be hold this bloke hit the deck, We were all called over even the bloke that fell , while we were waiting for this bloke to get up and come back to the group he fell again , we all thought that it was over for this bloke, The instructor asked him if he felt ok on the scooter , His reply was no its not balanced, HA we all looked at each other with grins and smiles. Anyway they took him away and got him a bigger bike vtr250, I said to a instructor that i didnt feel safe with him on the course and he said to me NOONE fails dont stress. Well at the end of the course this bloke that hit witches hats , traffic lights and even dropped the 250 got his licence, One of the other instructors said once it went private not many fail. And now they wonder why there are so many killed on our roads.

this seems like a typical knee jerk reaction to the problem. i have bee riding motorcycles for 28 years.
when i started there was not as many imbeciles on the road as there is now. if the calibre of our car drivers in townsville is anything to go by for the rest of australia , then we riders are in deep shit . most people that use the road drive cars .the training they get is stuff all just enough to get by a driving test.

I reckon its not about track days and how fast you can go,but about common sence and ridind safely.Enjoy the ride and don't push the limits cause thats when you'll come unstuck.

I didn't even have a riding test. Took the written & aked the lady if she was ready to go outside for the riding portion & she said "fuck that! I know you can ride & it's hot out there!"

I DO think y'all got it right on only allowing new riders to ride 250cc or less for a year. If they did that here it would save a lot more lives!

there's old riders and bold riders but there aint no old bold riders ............ like many here i went to rta many many years ago answered 20 questions got my L's and , in my case , bought a boldor 900 .. my previous experience before that was a honda XR75 LOL . nearly shit myself when i rode out ... crashed 4 times in first year of riding ..... still here 20 years later , got me a harley now to try and slow me down ... forget all the training , nothing is gunna save a pimply kid from twisting the throttle when he shouldn"t .

My first bike was a Honda 750 four on L's I'm still riding. Some people just shouldn't be on a bike let's face it they are dangerous enough in a car. Make them pay greater personal insurance for the first 3 years that will cover the costs of the guys with the shovel. Basically I don't care I have my licence and I know what I can do.
