Wow that is a good effort Uncle , although usually as hot as it gets , it`s a great time of the year in the provinces hey , a week long party atmosphere x water fight and even wilder in the cities !
Been over there for a few Thai New Years now , at first we used to hit the Cities but usaually spend it with the wifes family now , I standing out being a big bearded farang Aussie become an easy slow moving target for for all of them , everywhere i go , i spend most of the week soaking wet and covered in powder and flour !
Ya only live once hey !

too true scotti.... I really enjoy the festivities. I have probably experienced a dozen or more new years in Laos in the time I've been travelling to Asia and a couple of Chinese new years in Vietnam. Enjoyed them all and you are correct.. as a falung you stand out like a sore thumb although my misses has forced me to dispence with my trade mark goatee (hence the Uncle Ho reference.. lol)

Laos and Burma are my favourite countries in the south and Mongolia in the north.

I'll be back in Laos for good before this decade finishes.....

Fifth straight this year. Only doing the bike show week  though, usually have a tour up north, catch the village songkrans while doing a motorcycle ride, then head back to Chiang mai for theirs, then fly down to Patong for more water and the bike show before heading home. It's a hoot all right.......

They got a party for everything or festival almost every other second weekend in Thailand and usually a lota alcoholism involved , Loy Krathong is the one ya lookin for Baloffski , dodgie brew can bit of a problem at times i reckon , especially if a bad batch of Lao Kao homemade whisky is sold , not too long ago 10 villagers died , all perfectly healthy men apparently , they couldn`t for the life of them work out why , so they put it down to the curse of some angry female spirit takin`em out , and the cure , for villagers to hang a red t`shirt out the front of their house ? Case Solved Boss ? Go figure ?
Besides their whisky going down like trying to swallow warm petrol , don`t gamble with them , it`s a good idea not to get on the wrong side of anyone over there , it`s been known that strange things can and do happen ?
Basic rice village life is the best , litre or 2 of Wild Turkey for meself , take the watch off and throw it away , 3-4 weeks can feel like 3 months sometimes , very quiet life , no traffic , no hustle an bustle , actually bought a kingsize mexican hammock to take over as a gift for my missus family , it has a 400kg capacity , almost like a cargo net hey , it will support our whole family , though ten year ago our 5 nieces used to ask us to bring Aussie chocolates and Aussie shirts and stuffed roos or koalas , now it`s ipads and laptops (they`re cheaper to buy there) ?
Don`t think we will stay in Bangkok long , maybe just a day or 2 , go to Pantip and good tattooist in Khaosan at Pumpkin Studio i wouldn`t mind seein` , then hit the markets early get a coupla eskies of mad fresh seafood , head north and get our Nongkam Village party started , can`t freakin wait hey , good people !
Bike scene is a bit shit up bush though , they call our 200cc Honda Phantom (family transport), a Chopper ?

Scotty, is that  Nongkhan out east of Udon Thani? Second time we left Chiang Mai we got out as far easr as U/T  then went up to Nong Khia , planning for a crossing into Loa on the following trip. We scoped out the roads, distances, etc.  then rode north to the Mekong and followed it back towards the west to Dan Sai down in Loei. Hard work doing 350 ks a day on an FL in that country. In hidsight should of kept travelling east as the plan to get the bikes into Loas went belly up anyway

Nah Damage , Nongkam , it`s a little rice village 15kms west , out in the paddies from the nearest main town of Prathai which is not too big itself , which is about 200kms or maybe about 2-3 hours south of Udon (same Hwy sorta) but is a bit over halfway between Korat or Nakhon Ratchasima and Khon Kaen , 1hr 1/2 ride north from Korat .
There`s new bridge up that way over the Mekong now apparently , awesome countryside !
Although most people are kool , some are getting desperate and often target foreigners as if there is any sort of accident , it`s automaticly the foreigners fault , their rule is if the foreigner wasn`t there , there wouldn`t have been any accident !
So Beware as ya have no choice but to pay ya way out of it and could cost ya bigtime , it`s a scam i look out for whenever i ride or drive now !
Heading over on the 8th , then probably head up on the 10th ?
If ya over there alot , i got this Hemma like Thai/English Road Atlas Map Book from our local News `type agency by chance , it`s by The Road Association Of Thailand , mines the 2006 edition but has everything , that and the Lonely Planet Thailand book , i take my Thai Family to places they never knew even existed hey !
Will ya be passing by that way ?
