I'm looking into getting a set of vance and hines short shots or side shots, (havent decided yet) for my 1996 FXD. Can anybody shed some light as to if I would need to get the carby tuned after I fit them, or is it a case of suck it and see, or no case at all?

I'm after something a little louder plus the factory set are looking a little beat up so would like to replace em with a set of something new.

Any advice would be great guys, cheers

Anyone? I've searched but the only threads I can find are related to EFI models needing a tune after exhaust mods

Typically you would fatten up the AFR mixture. Check your plugs to see how your mixture is and take it from there.

    Hi mate,
I got short shots and ss carb fitted to my 98 fxd not long ago. The guy that fitted them did a full service for me also. I reckon if you have an idea, ou can muck around with it pretty easy....having said that, after forking out for pipes and fitting, I would try to pay the extra, get it done properly and try to learn as much as poss from mechanic...

Generally speaking if you go from stock pipes to free flowing pipes you do need to look at your jetting. Normally people fatten the mixture (ie make it richer) through larger jets or thinner needles - it all depends upon what type of carb your running.
