Bike is looking good, not a lot of people build their own bottom ends these days, good to se some skills still being used. Crazy weather , 45 here today, bloody hot, not going anywhere near the shed for a couple of days. Keep up the good work, will be great to see the finnished item.
Cheers
Hi,,The Pan .. the luxury of a 64 with swing arm ay..good stuff. . i've done lots more but didnt take many photo's ..
the pumps an origonal thats been chromed some time ago,l used a carbide bur in a drill to clean out the break in a half horse shoe type opening, machined a piece of steel to the correct shape, drilled & tapped with 1/8npt thread as origonal, id tried welding cast iron before (repairing broken fins on shovel cylinders)john gave me a couple of nickle type weld rods(arc) no problems with the repair.
made a breather pipe for the primary chain(its welded up & fitted ) & gear shift rod ill paint it black..
cleaned ,lubed, distributor, will replace the wire, might replace the points & condensor, its back together and placed in the motor..
the cylinders are later units and needed the hole drilling to lube the piston skirts, this is the 3rd set ive done, it shows in the book that you drill from the out side through, and plug the hole but its not necessary, you can drill from the inside, saving the job of welding or tapping the outer hole, start with a centre drill bit so it doesnt skate off & masking tape ,
a diamond chain has been fitted, still thinking about making an adjustable tensioner to suit the tin inner primary, gotta be in the right mood for that its not straight forward, ive got a single point 1966up hanging on the wall but im saving it for a rainy day,im going to run an internal throttle as a left side advance/retard unit for this dizzy, started that last night, havnt done anything in the head department, still thinking about it,ive got a good complete set on the shelf l cleaned up about 7 years back if needed ,oil pump bodygasket surfaces have been smoothed, left the repair piece a bit longer its finished & on the bike..bankokbob its a 1950 panhead the single point manual advance dizzy is standard on this,,.
So what do you do in your spare time? Not too many people with the skills and the balls to carry out this work as most just want to bolt on a new tiawan part from a catalogue. Great to see some real skills still being used.
Keep up the posts, top stuff.
the 8 fin cam covers from a knuckle, bit beat up ,few weld ups , and wrong bushing fitted, probably why it was cheap, pulled a correct type bush from a smooth cover id striped down to take for de-chome,,good timing, had an old 3 phase motor good for nothing but parts, stripped it got some good bolts ,cut to lenth & threaded for the dissy &-idler shafts.. also turned up a thrust washer for the breather ,& a few other bits here n there.
can button up the cam chest , lifter blocks ,lifters , now,
was going to make the parts but found some on line ..entered a part number in google for the relay bracket, its an origonal sent from fog hollow on old route 66, thanks... the arm & cable mount are after market copies from?l forget, the cable is a lawn mower throttle cable from mower & power in QLD the internal throttle ass. is a mid west item, using it on the left handlebar for the advance/retard.. , timed the dizzy, ran the wire to it,gaped the points, its all hooked up slides&works well... the slotted screws & other old looking bolts are from an old victa & some are from the old 3 phase motor, looks antiquey enough,
Hi kickinon, shouldn't be a problem, I've always used 12 volt sporty generators on panhaeds when changing from 6v to 12v.
so its only vis a versa in your case
but. if you have the bucks get a cycle electric "generator mounted regulator "
old style regulators are always a hit or miss specially when your doing big miles.
cycle electric inc part No. 380-755
havnt done any in the last month or so, but did finish the wiring, used a 12 volt system, the oil tanks coming back out soon, the oil line threads have been changed to ?? and need to be re-threaded in the correct size so std lines can be used, sold off the set of heads that needed work and are refurbishing the set id been saving for a rainy day ,the 2 into 1 after market exhaust with cigar muffler needs banging about a bit to fit ,mostly around the squish pipe area,
Try getting the smile off your face riding this, looks great, top effort.
thanks sled, yes looking forward to it ,,im waiting on a set of valves,,seats,,guides,to finish off the heads, their coming over via slow boat ,but should be here first week july,l have a roll of copper refridgerating line ,its close enough to the correct diameter for oil lines, havn't made any before, going to give it a go..
l did have to remove the oil tank to be able to re-thread the oil line fittings to the standard 9/16" 24tpi,& make a die holder to access the top 2 fittings, purched 200mm brass hex bar, machined some fancy fittings with holes around them, for the oil line fittings, they are twice the lenth of the standard chrome ones and couldnt get the bends as tight as l would have liked, machined a bit out of an old pipe flarer to get the right flare to fit over the tank fittings & to fit the brass fittings id made, could have made another 3brass for the other end of the oil lines but had enough chrome ones here to use and they are hard to see anyway + id had enough for one night,, any way its done..
