    Hey Guys

Ive recently inherited a 74 FXE Superglide and I'm doing a restoration project on it, this is my first Harley so ill apologies in advance as I may have to ask you guys a few questions over the journey. The first job is to do a parts list and I'm having problems which starter motor fits (Hitachi or prestolite) and also weather there is any difference in the solenoid

    Cheers

early had prestolite,  the housing with the starter mounting screw treaded holes are small for the prestolite & longer studs & bigger for the japan starter with shorter & fatter studs,                    do you have a reduction gear housing

all early solenoid are the same Big Twin & Sporty 1965 to 1986

    G'Day Bones,
Kiwidave posted a parts catalogue covering Shovels 71-84 . It's invaluable if you are doing a resto.
I took the liberty of uploading it to this site, dont confuse it with the FL only parts catalogue that is also there.

Thanks for the info and the links guys, I can see that parts catalouge comming in handy, by the look of the catalogue I need a Hitachi starter and I dont know what a reduction gear housing is daddyracer but ill get to the bottom of it. I also need a new battery box, where is the best place to get things like that, ebay dosnt seem to have much.

    Cheers, here it is

the FLH has the big 32 amp battery i do not think it will fit with that rear shotgun pipe she has the smaller battery box set up kicker only , you could go with the later 20 amp battery the starter will still work just mod the box that you have it will be cheaper & 1/2 a ton lighter,  reduction housing is what the starter motor hangs off , bolts to the inside of the inner pri case

    G'Day Bones,
Just having a quick look at your beasty and a few things stick out. Firstly I'd do a VIN number check and make sure of what it is.
I'm suspecting we are looking at an FL not an FX, it has been obviously changed around as bikes of this vintage always are.
Matching Numbers Stamped on both Engine and Frame.
Engine Number is on the Right Side Crankcase.
Frame Number is on the Right Side Steering Head.
The Frame Number is the VIN
First two characters code the model.
The last two characters code the year.
The middle numbers are production or serial numbers.
    Example: 1- 2A12345H2 = This is a 1972 FLH-1200 .

Clean it, change the fluids, start the fucker & ride it. If & when it brakes down, then fix it, at least you got X amount of miles before you spend a small fortune & you will have a better idea of what you will need! Just my opinion!
