Hi All, i know this may seem as a bit of a noob question, but I'm gonna ask anyway!

just wondering how your sporty, or any Harley for that matter goes at very low speeds?... Had my sporty for a month or two now, she runs like a dream, thumps along with the short shot pipes and SE breather, just how I want it running and sounding... BUT at very low speeds compared to other bikes I have ridden (Yamaha/Honda) in traffic when trying to stay upright at a slow crawl, or even a bit more than a crawl.. The bike starts to jump/stutter when clutch is fully out, forcing me to pull the clutch in a hell of a lot  and dare I say it "ride" the clutch a whole lot more than I am used too.. Making me concerned that I might be basically fucking the clutch.

Now with other bikes I have ridden.... and I know there not Harley's ....But going at a crawl speed you can generally let the clutch fully out, and control your crawl with rear brake till literally your almost stopped... Not so on my sporty, Revs are needed and a lot of clutch control.

Spoke to the dealer about it when she had her 1st service, he reckons she was all good, nothing unusual when taken for a test run... And that at low speeds with a Harley you do need a lot of clutch, and generally at least 2000 rpm on the revs to go smoother.

seems a bit odd to me, maybe I'm just wet behind the ears!? Anyone else find this a quirk of Harley's when the got there 1st one?

Yeah mate thought the same thing, i've ridden a few bikes in my time but have never had to clutch a bike as much as a Harley at low speed.

It's ok to ride the clutch a little now and then at low speed, better than lagging the motor. Give it revs. It loves it.

I think it's just the nature of the beast, that lumpy idle it is just awesome.

Haha... Forums, always a mixed bag of answers..

I agree though fe883 the throb at idle is awesome :)

I'd argue then that that's just the way they are, I don't mind cracking the throttle a bit in slow traffic anyway, with short shots it just makes people move outta the way lol... Just wondered if it was me imagining it stuttering or not... Cheers gents. :)

     Iron Gezer,

The 2 bikes I have ridden both being 883's they do the same thing.

At low speed coming to a stop, the bike sort of bunny hops as if its about to or wants to stall.

As the previous posters have said, I just think it is the way the bike is

I too used to ride Japanese bikes & this never happened. But these beauties are just a little different & they all have there quirks.

    Cheers.

Can safely say mine does this also. Sometimes high revs with a bit of back brake pressure will even it out a bit.

It wasn't so much the stalling part that made me notice it, but the hand pain. Man riding these things in peak hour working the clutch so much, going to have arms like popeye soon.

Beware that jump/stutter, if you don't ride the clutch (or cope in some way), the bike can stall on the compression stroke and stop pretty quick! In a straight line it's OK, but not so much if your turning a tight circle!!

Don't ask me how I know....

    Same thing for my nightster.

another reason why I lane split, can only keep pumping the clutch in traffic for a couple of minutes before my hand tells me to fuck off lol

It's the nature of the beast.

Driving a performance car with a hot cam does the same thing

Yeh I've gotten used to it, the wanking spanner is def now a bit more robust on the left now I've put in a few K's!!
Don't know how many of you guys are in WA but kinda what made me post the question was after a long ride home from her 1st service a few weeks back, I thought I'd avoid the always clogged up freeway and give her a bit more of a gentle run up the coast... Bad move, lots of traffic that way too, single lanes so no lane splitting and just letting her run, clutch brake, clutch brake... It was 40 degrees and pretty humid for over here, poor bike was like sitting on a iron top BBQ after 20 minutes... I lost weight from sweating so much lol

They lost me at phase iii turbo wotsit, hot cam too mate lol

Mines a HD 'canned map" I guess, the dealer loaded it up.....tho you would bloody think with the "standard" set up of short shots and SE breather that every man and his dog has on their sporty, they would have got that down to a fine tune by now! ......Suppose not!

Maybe the guys here can shed some light on wether the SE pro tuner is able to be tweaked by an "independent" shop? Or weather it can only run HD maps as I'm not sure, If it can its as good as any I would suppose?

Yep Muzz an indy or dealer can do a custom map on the dyno. You can even "smart tune" or manually tweak a map yourself if you have the SE software/cables & a laptop.

    Slap.

Cheers slap, at some point in the future I might ask those guys out out thundertech to have a look and give her tune up...

Have you used one of them kits stink, I've ever heard of them before? I'm used to it now anyways, just wondered if it was how ther bike was meant to run when I'd just got it

    Cheers,
