Guys , have also posted this question on the Softail section but was wanting peoples advice on what they thought a 2008 Fxstc  comfortable cruising speed should or could be .

Still have the restrcitive stock  pipes and  aircleaner on and soon will be replacing both as well as getting a remap but am a little dissapointed in the crusing speed of the new beast ... from zero to 90 or 95 no problems but pushing it to 100 and beyond really seems to be putting a lot of unwanted pressure on the new girl .

Had only 1200 K`s when bought and only done about 500 K`s these last few weeks so i realise it is still pretty tight but surly a 96 cube bike should be able to handle a 100 K`s or more ... i have had other brand bikes in the past that have flat spots in there rev range and was thinking this may be the case as it does seem to free up a little above 100 but dont want to push it and do any damage .

I do come from a Jap bike back ground of late and i dont expect it to rev like one of them but Jeez this thing is nearly a 1600cc engine ... am i expecting to much or are they that resticted and will it be a considerable difference once the new pipes aircleaner and remapping is done .

Thanks for any advice and idears ... Tim .

You might have to try the rest of the gears?

Should be good for 180 kph.Preferably not in a 60k zone.

it may be 1600cc's but its a V twin, air cooled motor so the sweet spot is closer to 3000rpm NOT 7000rpm on a sports bike.  ( give or take )

Should still pull at 170 at least and stretch it to 190 without any worries , what has been changed on it ?
    Something don`t sound right ?

Stay out of top gear until $1.10+. I dont use 6th unless steadily doin over $1.20. Will easily cruise all day long on $1.40 and regular bursts above and beyond that. You may need to change your riding style.

with only pipes and air cleaner changed plus tuner an otherwise stock 2008 96 will do well over 200 but it sure gets hard to hang on !!

at 100 im usually still in 5th or maybe just in 6th but its almost labouring in 6th at that speed. much happier at 110 - 140 in 6th

Hey new Bro, I have an 09, FLSTC & while they are a heavy bike, you should have no trouble powering up from 80klm in 6 gear all the way  180klm +. Something is definatly wrong, best advice is to take it to a Harely specialist (Not a Harley Dealer) & get them to take it for a ride & get their opionion! Sounds like it could be running lean or the timing is too far retarded etc. Don't ride it too much until you get it checked out. Let us know what it was. Mine loves to cruise from a 110 k to 140k where it just sings all day, every day without any stress.

PS. A nasty thought is that the motor could have been cooked & seized by a previous owner, I hope not!

Thanks for all the advice guys ... have a few things to look at now ... for one i will stay in 5th a bit longer and as a few of you said it should be good for a hell of lot higher than what i have had it .

Had a old 76 Shovel back in the late 80`s and that was good for well over the 120 mark especially once i got the gearing sorted out ... that was my first thought about this one as it is really good down low but not so good up higher ... i have been changing into 6th gear to early from the sounds of things .

As far as i am aware nothing has been changed on her apart from the bars and bling i have put on her ... i will definitly have the local Harley guy check her out and i`m really hoping Crazy Erny isnt right about possible cooked & Seized motor by previous owner ... insert crying man here if that is the case , Lol .

I know i am only going to stew over it until i get her checked out but would a Cooked and seized motor be pretty easy to start and feel real good from zero to 90 ... oil is good , dosent seem to run to hot ... what is a safe temp range after riding for up to a hour or so .

Thanks again guys and will let you all know the out come ... Tim .

Ah shit mate, I didn't notice before, you only live around the corner, you can come around here and give me a look at it, or you can go to the Grunt factory at Yatlia & get Robbo to take it for a spin & evaluation, just ring them first (38077211) & ask Simon (The owner) for the best & most convienient  time to go over!

Good engine temp depends on time of year, where you are riding & how hot the day is. Around this time of year cruising down the M1 200 / 225 F should be about average. Harley Says that the 96cu twinkies, run safe up to 300deg F But I would pull over at 275deg F temp & let the bike cool down. By the way, what sort of oil are you running in the motor & gearbox?

PS. Some good advice: Do not do any upgrades uintil you know for sure that your bike is running to factory specs, & again I would hesitate to push it hard through the gears as I have already stated I have no problems excellerating from 80klm to over 160+ in 6 th gear with a pillion on the back. It would also pay you get Bad Cookies advice as he knows his shit, same with Chopper.

    Cheers! C.E.

flat rev it in 5th before you think about changing to 6 and see how she goes. wouldn't advise it on the M1 down your way though

Hit the rev limiter on my FXST 2009 in 4th gear the other day and was surprised to see 185 and 2 more gears to go.

Your not wrong Ozy about taking it easy down my way , they sure do like to hang out around here the old boys in blue ... good to hear all you guys letting me know the new beast should be good for a lot more than what i`ve been giving her ... maybe i`ve just been to much of a pussy with her , Lol .

Hey Erny i know what you mean though about taking it easy until i have it checked out ... will get onto the guys down there you mentioned and see what they think ... when i have it sorted i will let you know how it all went ... have you had any dealings with the guys at Heavy Duty ... only ask as they are pretty close and have got a few little things from there and seem ok but havent had any work done there .

I understand the guys at HD are quite good and by the looks of the bosses set up on his dyna I would be comfortable letting them work on it.

You could take it up to Fred at Pro Cycle dyno for a free evaluation run but you will need to book it in he is flat out

Gidday Shingles ... yep it is a import , got a pretty good deal ... it`s definitly not a Californian model , and i know what you mean about the different fuels but i am running only the good high octane stuff .

I think from what you are saying as well as many others is that i was changing into 6th gear way to early so am definitly going to change my gear changing attitude .

Have just recently got my Freedom exhaust from the states as well as just this week getting my S & S Stealth air filter and Air Stream cover , so hopefully with those put on with of course a remap then the new girl will run a lot more free .

My only thought though is wether the IED`S that Retroman mentioned might be a option to look at , from what the PR Blurb says it seems to make sense ... does anyone know if there are there any distributors of these products in Sth East Qld .

Thanks for the advice Shingles , allways appriecated ... Tim .

I tried them and they did make a small difference. However a proper tune was miles better.
    I got them here
