Well, it all started this arvo, when I just wanted to relocate the clutch cable on my '79 Ironhead so I could put the original bars back on. I've taken apart the lever mechanism etc, undid the locking nut at the primary case to pull out a little more slack. Then as I did, I felt all come loose. Now, the cable won't come out obviously because of that stopper bit at the end of the cable inside the case, but now, no matter how much I tighten the nuts, the cable moves freely in and out.
Now, I assume I'm going to have to take off the primary case and relocate the cable inside back to where it should be (?). I'll do a bit more research on how it actually connects on the inside later, but is it as simple as that?
Also my other main concern is that the hex bolt beneath that transmission needs to be re-tapped. Something I can't do myself. I've done some research and believe my bike has a wet clutch, so I need to drain the oil first before taking off the primary case. The big question is: To avoid having to transport my bike to the shop, can I just open the primary case over a big enough pan and let the oil out that way? (re-tapping the other bolt later).
you have to take the cover off, the realese unit the cable goes into has 3 3/8" ball bearings pack lightly with grease so the ball stay in place in the middle of the ramps do not pull on the cable untill the cover is on adjust the main screw untill it just touches then back off 1/4 turn & lock it up then adjust the cable slack ,check for clutch opp before going any further , for the drain thread i use a bspt or npt i forget what one it is , gas taper tap use grease & keep it straight tie bike upright straight 1st , use a gas trapered presure plug i think its a 3/8 npt from & engineer supply no worries have done quite a few
the oil will come out when you take off the pri cover
do you have a manual for this model, as the g/box oil is seperate from the engine oil , 1 full ltr in the g/box
Thanks for that. Haven't got a manual yet. Trying to source one though! Will troll through Youtube to find how to do it properly once gasket, cable and new tensioner has been purchased.
