1996 Sportster won't start

Hey guys I was wondering if somebody could help me. I have recetly purchased a 1996 Harley Sportster with an 883 engine. Of late I've started to have some issue with it though.

The bike won't start. If i take the spark plug leads away from the spark plug by about 5mm, the bike starts. It idles okay, but when I choose to put the spark plug lead back onto the spark plug, the engine cuts out.

Is there anybody who may be able to provide some insight into the issue because I've been working on it for a few weeks and can't seem to figure it out.

    Cheers

    Ivan

Cool, gotta love the odd ones. My only thought is the lead is fucked. When you take it off the spark can jump, but when you put it on its pressing past the point where its making good contact. Clean the shit out of the lead (the metal) and the end of the spark plug, or better yet, replace them.

Yeah, replacement sounds like a good idea.

Thanks for the reply...Unfortnatey I have just bought brand new spark plugs, spark plug leads and coil

This is why its such a confusing issue for me, because you would assume straight away that's the problem but it appears not to be...any other ideas??

You sure its the right sparkplug? Maybe its too long/thin so, again, the connector is slipping on past the point of contact. Yeah, I'm just clutching at straws :)
