the cams im getting say there strongest from 1500-5000 rpm which is fine by me will let you no how they go will be riding this weekend.

with an intake closing of 18* this is a bottom end cam and will build torque quick but run out of puff early, similar to the SE255 cam

this is a different cam to the 55G (46* intake closing) Krash was talking about, like chalk and cheese

if its for a 103ci I would be looking at the Andrews 57h cam for a nice midrange all round bolt in cam, I put this cam in a mates 96ci with a slightly shaved head and it ripped and didn,t give up

if ya looking for that bottom end torque the Andrews 48h would be just as good and wouldn,t give up as early

as for gear drives I would be measuring the crank runout before going down that path, if HD Motorcycles doesn,t bother to measure ya crank run out and just wants to bolt the gear drives on, I personally would stay well away from that joint

    hey will,

sounds like you have a beast now!
how much did it set you back for parts and then how much to fit it?

hope the bike is still doing good and you keep it upright!

    cheers,
    Josh.

Hi mate ,i changed from S E211,s to 585 ezy start cams, i was shitting starter clutches every 2-3 mths with the 211,s  since i put the 585,s in iv,e had no dramas ,they are a bit noiser the the 211,s (slightly lumpier) and they come in at 3000rpm where as the 211,s at 2600rpm ,which has taken a bit of getting used to ,the 211,s have more low down punch but if i keep the revs up from the start the bike screams the 585,s are a great cam  you will like your 583,s

l wrote here somewhere else about these S&S 583 cams but could not find the original post but any way my engine was originaly an 09 96 cuber , l fitted a 103 SE kit with the 255 cams,it also had a SE tuner S&S tear drop cleaner V&H Propipe to suit the baggers. The original dyno run with that set up was 87 HP 101 TRQ, couple years later , sick of the starter issues fitted a set of 583's, initial dyno run came back at 91HP and 103 TRQ, took it home in the ute unloaded it, said this is all wrong, took it back to the shop told them to check cam timing because it was so lame, they confirmed everything was ok so back to the tuner. Surprise , susprise it comes back with 101 HP and a 122 TRQ. l got those figures because some one dropped the ball and l wasn't going to accept what was offered. The high torque figure l can put down to the cams and excellent exhaust and the lenght of it. l do like these cams but are a little bit slow of the mark around the 1200 rpm which possibly could be rectified with a bit more dyno time. My bike is basically a stripped dresser weighing in at around 360 kilo's so proberly a tad heavy for these cams but it stills pulls the cook and l around with some urgency.

Unfortunatly for some people so they say, l have been fiddling with Harleys for 35 years and having owned 7 and a lot more other brands you get an idea whats going on in the zoo , l obviously don't ride at 1200 rpm , these cams because of the feature with the ramp need to idle at 1000 rpm otherwise the exhaust valve would stay off the seat. Anyway when turning on the tap l found that there was a lag until the revs got to the 1500 mark and away it went. With regards to dyno print out , it is what is, l don't see what the tuner would gain by bullshitting. l did speak to a mate last night , he runs the S&S 106 Kit with the 583 cams with a different exhaust , tuned by the gent in Bayswater and his figures were 101 HP 113 TRQ, again l put the hi torque value down to the excellent exhaust. lf you get a chance there is an excellent book written in the 50's by gent called Phill lrving ,and that book is Tunning for speed. l would recommend anyone who wants to know the secrets to going fast read the book . Apart from the electronics there's nothing new in speed.

if you really want to do your head in find a copy of "The Scientific Design Of Exhaust And Intake Systems " and have a read. Got a lot of years on it now and ideas have changed but still worth a read for those so inclined

Well after several Jacks and much cursing the above pdf has got the printout, hopefully click on to that and you will see whats going on . The exhaust is the key to this result , hopefully others will get an idea from what l have done. Good luck
