It just goes to show you how something so simple can cause confusion, just make sure you check it when the oil is warm otherwise you will get an incorrect reading.

Asking questions is one way we all learn damo08, I heard a story off a mechanic years back about someone who had filled their engine with oil all the way up to the oil filler! I have my doubts if it's true though, probably just another urban myth.

Yep, all the above correct, except you should be checking your engine oil at running tempetures. The same applies to your gearbox, but with the gearbox plug you don't screw it all the way back in to check your level, you simple let it sit on the top thread in the gearbox then measure it!~ Do check both a couple of times each!

Cheers Roster, what is important is to never overfill, & as far as draining is concerned it's not possable as the oil has got to get passed the oil pump to drain which is not possable with the engine turned off. I could be wrong but I doubt it!

In the soft tails, oil will drain past the oil pump & into engine over time. If bike has sat for some time, oil level will be low, so it is best to run engine for a minute or two then check level after shut down. The problem is worse with some aftermarket pumps that don,t have the wavey spring between the pump gears like the HD pumps have.- Rob
