From a reliability point of view as well as financial, is it worth buying a stock 1200 than increasing the capacity of an 883?

I'm hoping to get a good deal on a used bike where someone else has already paid for the aftermarket pipes and filter. For a while the only other mod after that I want to fit is the dual speedo/tacho.

I went into the local dealership to enquire about the cost of servicing and after-market parts and didn't like the way they tried to turn me off used bikes. Guy on the floor said I was stupid for not paying $2K to $3K more to get a brand new bike with warranty. When I explained that I had a budget to consider and that buying used meant I could afford the extras that made it the bike I really want, he told me that anyone that buys a bike on a budget is dumb and that I should just buy the bike I really want. Then he pointed out the 2014 Night Rod Special on the showroom floor... I get his point about buying a bike that's not the one you really want because it's all you can afford, and I understand that he's only interested in selling a bike he makes a commission from. Even if I intended to get all the work done in that dealership it would be at the service department and he wouldn't see any direct commission from that. Truth is, I have a family and other financial obligations so I can't just put myself in $25K of debt on a whim, but I'm happy to compromise to realise my long term dream of owning a HD.

Synthesthesia, another alternative for you to consider is the current sportster custom 1200B. This comes in denim black, the same as the Iron, and has the wrinkle black 1200 motor, mini apes and forward controls, as well as the bigger 17 litre tank. It comes with the 16 inch front wheel the same as the 48, but has the full rear guard, not the chopped guard like the Iron and 48. For those that want the all black look, but in a factory 1200 and with a decent range (bigger tank) it is an often ignored but very good option I think...TC
