Will an exhaust system from a 2006 dyna fit on to a 2001 wide glide

The bike was dropped and I can get a hold of a 2006 exhaust for next to nothing

Yes it will "fit" up to the mounting points etc , but it won't "do the job" 100%

That's because the 2006 Dyna has O2 sensors into the downpipes and the 2001 does not.

There is a chance that the 2006 system has "blanking plugs or bungs" for the O2 sensor holes , look like big "nuts"

Now mufflers alone , well they will fit with no dramas

Now you may be right there Re the gearbox. 2006 first year of the 6 speed in the Dyna. ( Softails not until 2007 !)

I have only ever fitted " earlier " mufflers to later bikes , ie 2000 mufflers to 2008 Dynas , and they fit no worries

I fitted 2000 Screamin' Eagle Torque Tapered mufflers to my own 2006 Dyna and they went right on no worries 

So I was making an assumption that the downpipes would be fine

A mate of mine did try to fit up a V&H Big Radius 2:1 from a 2008 Dyna to his 2003 Dyna and it didn't fit properly , dipstick in the way etc etc , so that MAY be the problem you've just described .

That's nowhere near the same shape as a stock system of course

If you can "hold" the 2006 system up to your bike you'll be able to see any potential problems right away

But if you've got to buy and post it etc then that's a no go-er obviously !
