Hi guys , got myself a bit of bling for the new ride , chrome axle covers ... both front and rear just have the covers and grub screws ... shouldnt there be some sort of plastic shroud that goes over the axle and nut on other side before the cover goes on so the grub screw has something to bite into .
They seem extreamly loose and yes i checked to see if i had them on the right side , Lol ... checked catologue and numbers match but just seems like a sure way to loose a few dollars as soon as you ride over a few bumps and the screws loosen up and the covers would just drop off ... as it would be metal grub screw onto metal axle head or nut .
Have checked other model covers and they seem to have plastic shrouds ... is it possible i got a bad batch or am i missing something .
Bike is a 2008 FXSTC ... thanks guys , will be interesting to see if i have totally fucked up or parts are missing ... cheers , Tim .
Mate, got axle covers for the wifes Slim and found pretty much the same thing. the one on the nut side was a sloppy fit, the other side snug. when fitted tho and grub screw tightened they sit securely and square. Have been told by a few guys that the grub screws still tend to loosen after a time, even with loctite, so squirt a bit of silicon in the cover then put them on. not too much tho,cos ya gotta get em off again for tyre changes n shit.Hope this helps. Pete.
For what it's worth Tim, coupla tips that I'm aware of with the covers that don't have plastic shrouds/ inserts.
If ya axles have them rubber / plastic bungs / stoppers in the end of them , remove them so the caps fit square up all the way over the nut.
The grub screws are normally too tight in the cap, so run them through all the way a coupla times to make sure the thread isn't binding.
Then apply a dab of blue thread locker prior to fitting.
If ya really keen, ( cause after a coupla removals / re-fits, those 1/8 grub screws easily strip out either the thread or head), drill and tap the caps to 1/4" and find some 1/4" grubscews to fit, I find brass the best cause ya can drill him out easy if the head ever strips.. Saves a lot of muckin around in future and ya can put a lot more grunt on them to make sure they stay.
( I just got brass machine screws in mine right now, looks kinda neat with them polished up, tiny detail but those in the know notice)
Prolly best to source ya screws first so ya know what thread ya need ta tap the caps.
Seems like all parts manufactures could do better with the original specs, but i guess a lot don't mind if ya go back in the future and buy another set ta replace the first ones.
Good luck Mate, Cheers.
