S&S 510 Cams Fitted Today & Dyno Tuned

Being totally unhappy with my bike after I installed, S&S slip on mufflers (I did not like the sound of them once fitted) plus SE Stage I Air upgrades were done and 3 attempts of dyno tuning by Harley Heaven (my advice to everyone don't be sucked in by cheap pricing with these guys they are not doing a proper dyno tune they are simply installing can maps ) failed to stop the bike from decelling and popping at virtually every gearchange and on every deceleration plus the bike hunting at 60 km/h along with running very hot, but it was constant popping and decelling that was driving me crazy.

So I I thought about putting on V&H big radius 2 into 2 exhaust and a larger air kit. However everyone I spoke with indicated I would lose a minimum of 5 hp. So that was out of the equation.

Next I looked at getting the bike dyno and thought bugger it put some cams in! Then it was what cams "what a circus" after being totally confused I thought just let the guy who is going to dyno the bike choose which ! I did his choice was the S&S 510C easy start...Given that I tend not to break the speed limit and was really only after increases in performance for overtaking, hillclimbing and 2 up riding.

Okay just pick the bike up today, first impressions WOO HOO "Toyota jump in the air" OH WHAT A FEELING, my bike finally does not Decel or Pop anymore cannot believe it. It even sounds like a Harley with a nice rumble and note(I am finally happy with the sound of the mufflers, who would have thought a cam and good dyno could make such a difference to sound). In terms of performance at this stage I have not taken it for a decent run but there is a definite improvement in throttle power.

    BIKE IS A 2012 FLSTN 103ci

Original run file before fitting S&S muffler and SE Stage I,    Maximum Power - 66.63   Maximum Torque - 82.95

Run file after fitting S&S 510C cams                                   Maximum Power - 87.49     Maximum Torque - 96.75

But it's the power curve all the way through the range that looks impressive.

Hopefully tomorrow I will get a good chance to take it for a run down the freeway so I can give a report back on the power improvements.

I've also added some chrome over the last few months along with the bullet shaped indicator lights at the front and use the dark lenses both front and rear of the bike.

congrats that is a big improvement but I thought it should be better with the cam. as long as it rides nice for you that is all that counts.
Nice looking ride by the way. the lux are a nice looking bike for sure

Just thought I'd report back on my bike after a few trips.

While you don't notice any power improvement around the city my god you notice it once you start getting around the 80 km/h mark and beyond. There is a significant feel of power right through the power range from the 80 km/h mark and even on highway speed of 120 km/h in six gear and wanting to overtake there is no need to change down gears as it keeps powering on under power in 6th. Climbing steep grade hills 2 up is where it really comes into its own.

But the real surprise for me was the sound of the bike it now sounds like a Harley nothing like the sound of that Cam Sound at idle. Along with the fact I don't have any D-cell or popping at all zero.. Bloody amazing compared to what I had previously before the cam and dyno done virtually every gear change downwards/upwards and every deceleration produced D-cell and popping.

Interesting enough last week I was away interstate and popped into a Peter Stevenson store for a look around and notice the screaming Eagle spark plugs and 10 mm screaming Eagle high tension or plug leads whatever you call them. I fitted them over the weekend and went for a ride late Sunday afternoon. The bike seemed to run even better than before! Some people might say that's just my imagination but clearly from my experience my bike it seemed to give further improvement in performance and running. So I would recommend this as a great cheap modification.

Finally fuel consumption, can you believe I'm now achieving in excess of 330 km per tank with a mixture of approximately 30 to 40% city and 60% highway travelling. In fact on one tank I think I achieved almost 345 km out of that run.

I'm now thinking about putting chrome switch housing on my handlebars and keeping the black switches. I'm unsure whether to go with the Harley Davison product or a aftermarket product guys would appreciate feedback on this from those that have done.

Also, I used Adelaide Bikeworks to do the install on the Cam and the Dyno tune. Would recommend them highly. Not totally the cheapest in Adelaide but in my opinion they do the best work.

well that has certainly worked out great for you in every area. congrats

re switch covers. I like the chrome / black set up. I don't know about the aftermarket gear other than it should be a lot cheaper than HD stuff. The only thing I would suggest is that the HD covers should fit just like your originals.

I’m not sure of the specs of a s&s510 but I used a se254e and dyno’d at 102hp 110tq but it is a 103 now. S&S slip ons hi flow and tuned on a 09 street bob
I’m looking to upgrade my flhx. And looking for a better highway cam for  interstate kroozn

Post a copy of the dyno sheet, peak numbers don't tell the story, need to see the torque and hp curves. Helps others decide what cams to use.
