    bath,

They should have 1 or 2 bikes that you could test ride. All you have to do is ring them and arrange a time for a test.

They do it in Sydney, so I can't see why it would be any diff. in Melb.

Sit on all off them and see what is the most comfortable.

I always loved the look of the Fatty so my choice was easy......

Hey dazza, how do we softail riders know if you are not too limp to be able to handle a softail?? Maybe thats why you need a dyna, because the softy's just scare you way too much!!!!!!! Dont let it worry you though, when you get older you can always upgradeIt's all about lines Bathmagic,if you want a set of shockies to spoil the look of a perfectly good bike,go for a dyna

Hi and welcome.... suggest you PM Vlad (Vladt), get his number and have a chat with him.... he has just been through the selection path and ended up with a short list of Night Train and Street Bob... he is located in Melbourne as well

As the forum is likely to get this style question again and again we need to produce a newby flowchart if you like.

Perhaps a matrix or filter based on some pretty basic questions. There really arent that many different bikes that arent cosmetic options of the same bike.

    Hows this for starters:

Fat front Wheel or Skinny Front Wheel

    Exposed Shocks or Hidden Shocks

    Air Cooled or Water Cooled

    Under $20k $20k-$30k Over $30k

    Forward Controls or Mid Controls

    Balanced Motor or Unblanced Motor

Solo or Pillion (although easily changed)

    Black Motor or Silver Motor

I think an answer too each of these would make it pretty easy to offer a model choice.

    cheers

    Surly

Hey Bathmagic... looks like you've ruled out the v-rod... only leave a couple dozen options. Go down to Peter Stevens and and any other H-D dealer and ride as many bikes that take your fancy and then some that don't... narrow it down to two and ride them again... it will be a clearcut decision... or your will still be totally confused... then look at what you liked about the other bikes that didn't make the cut and that will be your 'wish list' for customisation.....

well uncle ho your comment about the sportster realy got my back up, went something like this, doesnt the bloody wanker know anything about the history of HD and their longest running (and the worlds) model. The very best HD made for those who have the balls to ride one as apposed to an armchair with 2 wheels under it or a modern day 2 wheeled winnabago. But then i calmed down and figured what the fuck does it matter i love my bike and you love yours and aint that all that matters in the end. You deal with the same weather as i do, the same nut cases and cotton tops who try to run over us with monotinous regularity. You also enjoy being on the road as much as i do(well i hope so), just being there is what matters in the end. But please dont hang shit on my ride because i wont waste my time hanging shit on yours because i,m too busy riding to worry about that crap. Sportster, half a harley? yeah the fast half! stay upright mate.

    well that was good timing
I called peter stevens at dandenong today and theres a test ride on next week.
so im off there tormorrow to have a sniff and put my name on the list for a ride on...
    fat boy
    soft tail night train
    v-rod
    and yes a Dyna ....

the guy at peter stevens was quite helpfull and was willing to chat for a while on the differences which was good.

BUt shit i recon i can burn some cash at that place once we started talking wide rear wheels and motor up grades

is it best to get a standard one and then buy pipes and seats and controls off the net from the US ?
given the recent fall or rise in the AUS against the US dollar this stuff should be dropping in price not going UP?
Cheers for your help and advice guys

PS where on this site do i search for users so i can contact this "Valdt" guy??

    Thanks

That's good news about the ride day

This will give you the best chance to get a feel for all of them, Make sure you have a second ride of the on you feel most comfortable on

You are much better off buying all your BLING from the U.S. ( you will save mega bucks )

Although I have found a Local guy selling online and his stuff is in stock and shipped next day  www.cheapharleyparts.com.au

hey PUB and anyone else that I may have offended.... don't just read the words... take them in the context of the total thread and understand the meaning of smilies...

My shortlist last year included the 50th aniversary, but at 6'2" I am a bit lanky for the bike. It is a great bike with a great engine... nuf said

Pub, I would like to state for the record that I have no idea what a "cotton top" is but I imagine if it ran me over, it would be soft and fluffy.
However a case of nuts would probably hurt.

Bathmagic, we all have our preferences depending on our environment and the type of riding we do, what our mates ride or in some cases, the bike that impressed us when it rode past us as a snotty little kid with our face up to the window of mums EH. So We're all a little biased.

However, I would say that whichever Harley you buy, it will be the love of your life and you'll get immense enjoyment out of riding it and maybe even doing a few mods if that takes your fancy.
My advice if it's your first HD and you're not sure what you want it for, get something that will do a bit of everything.
A bit of touring, a bit of cruising and a bit of scratching.
They will all do it, but I reckon a Dyna will do them all the best if you are going for a big twin.

If you're a newish rider, the mid mount pegs on most of the dyna's would be a good idea as well rather than forwards and you could convert it to forwards later if you desired.
