does your model have the plastic hyd  cam follower retainers  in top of the cam followers to stop them from turning around , as the earlier models have a steel pin across  the flat part of the cam follower , i need too find  billet aluminium type as they say the later plastic can only handle 600 lift max & can stuff up & split cheers, as i need too build fastest 1250 c.c. sporty  12.5 to 1 comp with 600+ cams

i heard that these can crack open & the lifter turn & stuff up the cam lobe's & smash valve's  into pistons if raced on , i'am trying to find billet aluminium one  does any body know of any @tm i'am building a 1250 @ 12.5 to 1 C.Ratio + with a 600 lift cam on  a late 2009/10 model  & I'AM WORRIED ABOUT THIS AS THIS BIKE WILL BE USED FOR DRAG STRIP USE @ 7.500 rpm every gear change

dr56, have you tried getting in contact with hammer performance in the US for these? I'm sure they would have made something if they have been a problem....

Wayne had a follower turn side on, with high lift cams in the 97  S1 said Zippers have a fix, he got the Zipper part & no more trouble. but the new stuff would be different again.

The Patriot Defender 2-1 seems to be getting good power/torque on the sportys, even better than the Samson. Comes in black or stainless. Relatively cheap too.

If you want the best pipe for your setup it is going to cost. The only way to get the right pipe is to spend hours upon hours on the dyno changing pipes to find which one will be close enough. The only way to get the "right" pipe to get the most possible out of your setup is again on a dyno but making the pipes yourself (changing primary lengths, sizes etc) to find what really works best.

I hope that has done your head in a little more...... :)

seriously man if your not racing on a track put whatever you like/looks good to you. With a 90" sportster (providing your not a massive fat cunt) power to weight you'll smash most out there (when you learn to ride it)!!!

I've also read the short shots are not big performance champs, I believe the sideshots are a better system. A decent pair of slip-ons on the stock headers are supposed to be a fairly potent combo, my bike previously had the Khromewerks slip-ons installed, nice deep sound but the stock headers & crossover bracket weighed a tonne, would've been interesting to see how it dynoed. What works for others though may not necessarily work for you, like T1 said only way to find out your perfect pipe is try several on the dyno, that could get expensive though.

Hammer have dynoed a few pipes on their shop 1250. Look here http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=331 in the stickys.

Hey 5, the pipes can make a difference, but if your happy with what you have, don't waist $, we have some good pipes here in Aussie just everyone only look at what they use in the states & the price gets inflated shiping a set here.

daddyracer56 has a set of mega cycle that's the best 2 into 1 system I've seen for making TQ & power on sporty's & made in aussie too just his set few bumps but could ask him about buying and try them on dyno & a set of sonic from Melbourne Slip On's they work great & cost less that made in USA you also support your country. then see what difference is but to map EFI it takes a day or more so costs $ that's why i'm still a carb man as cheap bugger

    cheers & good luck

Hi ltr, I have been reading about your build with a lot of interest as i have been wanting to do this to my 96 1200 sporty but gave it up when they said the frame might have to be modified to suit the 90 inch kit, did you have any problem with this. If your looking for pipes that make HP check out www.rbracing-rsr.com, they make 2-1 race pipes to suit most applications, good luck with the rest of your build.

the patriot is the best pipe on the market atm for sporties, hammer has tested a lot of pipes on their shop bike and it wins and its cheap.
I didn't know anyone made an aftermarket tb for sporties ?
the efi manifold is a lil restrictive aswell hammer can port it for $60.

5L, I'm in the same boat as most, waiting for some excess cash so I can spend it on the bike. I thought that a beefier cam and some head work would be next, but after reading your last post re: cylinders / pistons, just wanted to ask if you had to do anything to the bottom end? Is it the stock crank etc?
