Erratic Idle 2003 Roadking

Gday peoples just thought I would share a problem that i encountered with my fuel injected roadking .

Erratic and running rough at idle started all of a sudden - spoke to the local harley guys and yeeer well you know could be this could be that bring it in and let us diagnose it for you Mmmmmm !!

Jumped on a USA forum and found a problem that is well known over there - so checked mine and yep there it was a broken butterfly in the throttle body , I do all my own wrenching don't like throughing hard earned money arround . Any way ordered a new bare throttle body and swapped the sensors over and away she went .

The only problem I have now is she is ideling just a tad to low around 750 rpm so when I get time I'm planning on drilling the butterfly stop out and threading and fitting an adjustment screw on the outside of the throttle body to adjust her back to fac settings .

Any thoughts would be greatfully recieved !!

One other problem that I encounted recently was the front drive pulley on the gearbox stripped the spline out - luckly the damage was only to the pulley not the shaft . After further investigation found the spacer behind the pulley which should be tight against the main bearing in the gearbox had a massive burr around it where it had over a long period of time been spinning free - not good this meant that the the pulley had movement and was able to destruct itself .

Can't help but wonder why harley put a left hand thread on a splined shaft that rotates left hand and relys on a retaining or locking washer to back it up Mmmmmm poor engineering . The dissapointing part for me is the lack of interest the local harley shop shows . If there not making a fortune out of you they dont care !!!!

Hopfully the photo's will come through !!

Anyway all good hope this helps somone somehere Cheers Denni

Yeeer ya right they dont like you googling either or forums its a pity - can only hope harley does not go down the same road as the brits did with there bikes as in failing to recognise there problems and correcting them . Ive read where harley in the USA knows of so many issues but wont admit to them !!

Anyway I love mine just gotta keep the spanner handy LOL Cheers Denni !!

Gday guys just thought I would let you know when I went to drill out the throttle stop on the throttle body , so I could put an adjustable one in It already had an adjustable screw from the factory which was awesome -- just a easy adjust and she is back to runing spot on .

The origonal throttle body did not have the adjustment they are a pressed in non adjustable stop preset at the factory .

Went for a test run yesterday -- road about 100klm in about 28-30 degrees celcius and it was perfect !!!
