Anyone tried " quietening" V&H Big Shot staggered ?
I've just bought a 2008 CVO Springer, which came from the states with with V&H Big shot staggered fitted.
Even on the initial test ride I thought they were way too loud, and after a couple hundred K's I KNOW it !!
What are the options if any ? I'm going to get "Yellow stickered" up the wazoo before i know it !
With the 110 they are crazy loud . V&H list a " quiet " baffle, anyone tried it in Australia ?
I have a New bike take-off Fatboy full system to go on if need be , but the looks of the big shot staggered are growing on me.
Plus these have of course the V&H " power chamber " setup linking the downpipes which actually works OK !
Any reccomends gents ?
Hi Guys,
The quiet baffles helped a bit, remember they only drop the the noise by 2-3 db. I had some S&S slipons that were loud. When I rode I could hear the engine top end nosises, now all I hear is exhaust noise. Sounds great though. I don't think they'll do what you are expecting. I'm going to try and modify the original baffles with the quiet ones and see if I can get then a bit duller.
Like Maxiboy says, the quiet baffles don't pass the noise meter test. Just a little bit quieter and seem to lessen the crack a smidgeon.
The quiet baffles are resonabley inexpensive and can be played with to a certain extend.
The mid section is perforated, and a slightly less diameter (too allow for fibre glass packing) but strong enough to be able to grind slots in and weld in extra baffle plates.
The other way to attack it is to make your own and experiment, the V&H Big Shots take a cartridge style baffle that is 10 3/4 inches long and has an O.D. of 2 inches.
Half slots cut into a length of exhaust pipe at what ever angle you think best and shaped baffle plates welded in would create all sorts of effects depending upon how many slots and what size restriction plates you used.
I've done two slots and two plates in the quiet baffles but still too noisy to pass the test,,, the next step for me is to try five slots / plates, I reckon that will get close to a happy medium.
The slots are cut on alternate sides of the baffle, spaced about 1 1/2 inches apart, and go in half way.
I used a hack saw, thin metal grinding disc, and simply fusion welded the plates in with oxy/accetelyne small tip.
this is what i did
the old wheelie bin for a workbench
Gregg, I had a short drag pipe system on a 48 that was louder than any V&H system and I pulled a baffle out of a set of V&H double barrells which is the quietest system they sell. I went to an exhaust shop and got some pipes with the OD and ID required to copy the style, I had them flare one end of the smaller one the fits inside the larger tube to leave enough gap for the gasses etc. I welded two pipes together to get the shape and step of the outer tube and drilled more holes than the stock as well, I capped the ends like theirs and drilled a 10mm hole that they didnt have. the end result was It was a tad louder than S&S slipons and made way better HP and torque, I fitted torque cones as well to compensate for the short length and located the washers in the same place to take the stock screws so the finished baffle was located in the same spot. You can see the stock baffle in the pic and the inner and outers I was making, overall length of the outer was was 300mm
Daz
Fitted these today to the CVO Springer
Wrapped them in Steel wool scrubbing pad , and mounted them with the same bolt hole for the V&H slash cut tips
I would have preffered to mount them with the original V&H noisy baffle mounting bolts but one of them "rounded" when I tried to extract it. Where I could I have used 7/16 Hex bolts ro replace the V&H allen/button bolts . You can't see them mounted up anyways
These are 4 inch . and just meet the end of the "stock" noisy baffle. With "persuasion" they would fit into the noisy baffle but I'm mounted just shy of them.
Starting in the garage they still seem noisy as !! Not a good test tho' I know , I'll venture out tonight when it cools down a tad.
If they FUCK the performance I'll post up ASAP . Obviously I'm trying NOT to take the V&H system off , if I do I won't be putting it back on , I'll use a stock Fatboy system and slip on freeflow mufflers
At $20 ( for the pair ) and $3 for the "Steelo" scourers and a bit of farting around it's worth a try I thought !

UPDATE Those wee baffles I tried in the V&H pipes did reduce the noise, with a wee bit of " fluffing" at idle But they did " fuck the mumbo " so they're out again After mucho digging around the net , I came up with these , Khrome Werks 2.5 inch drag pipe baffles They come in the same format in different diameters and are " changeable" to suit different diameter / manufacturer pipes
You just bend the flanges with pliers.
According to all I've read they hardly interrupt the gas flow at all.
Made by Acoustic Research and are the same baffles as are in AR11 and Khrome Werks mufflers.
I have 2 sets on the way , and will again post the results.
By fuck this CVO Springer has some mumbo and i want to retain that without the BANG on startup that the standard cheesegrater "baffles" give
