Hi guys, to begin with as mentioned my first thread in the introductions a couple of days ago, I'm new to Harleys so please forgive my ignorance. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me the standard rear shock length on a 1996 FXD Super Glide Dyna.

I'm looking at upgrading to some progressive springs possible a little lower without compromising ride quality too much plus the original shocks are getting a bit tired and have seen better days, so any advice on length would be great as well. From what I've read the heavy duty options are to rigid no matter the setting so I'll stay well away from them. Thanks in advance boys

The stock length is usually 12". If you carry a bit of weight, or ride aggressively, put 13" on. This will sharpen the steering a tiny bit with the reduced trail, give you a smut more clearance and will also give you a much more pliant ride. A reasonable local brand is Ikon. These usually have three preload and four rebound settings for good ride control. If you live near Brisbane pm me and I can lend you a set to try.

    Cheers for the reply Beagle.

I'm not the heaviest bloke, coming in at 89k and as I'm new to riding I don't really ride too agressively, Perth people have enough trouble merging without throwing a bike into the mix as well. I was thinking about switching to 11.5" to lower it a little and give it some kerbisde good looks. I know you sholdn't really mod for form over function, but would there be any other disadvantage with losing half an inch besides clearance issues?

I had a mate tell me the other day you can get adjustable shocks, which you can alter the height , etc of by twisting them, any truth in that?

Thanks for the advice from all those who gave it. I'll stick with the 12" to keep the handling I've decided.
