new pipes for my switchback

    Hi all.

My missus bought me some new cobra short swept dual exhausts for my switchback for Xmas. I just wanted the slip on, but she reckons these pipes will look and sound better. Anyway, I have had experience in the past with putting new exhausts on a 70's model FLH and an 80's sportster, but the only hard thing back then was getting them off. The new exhausts then just slipped straight on.

I pretty sure that these are not going to be so easy. Can I fuck anything up by trying to do this myself or should I leave it for the dealer ( as its due for a 1600 service soon anyway) I have also read that I should change the air cleaner and get it tuned when I change the pipes?

I also read a post by Maxiboy asking for help installing new pipes and Hmmm 2 came to his place and helped him . Pretty decent I reckon. If you read this Hmmm, I dont expect the same favour as I live halfway around the world away, but if anyone in Perth is feeling benevolent, I would be pretty grateful.

    Cheers

    John

If you have any problems or need torque spec's just ask for help on the forum. If your been there with older bikes you won't have any problems with the later TC that a rubber hammer and a can of WD40 won't fix. The bike will need a tuner if you want it to run cooler with less exhaust popping so its recommended. If you put a carton of beer in the fridge with couple kg prawns I'm sure you will get a few helpers for advice.
    Good Luck

    Thanks guys.
Pipes are still in the box as the wife won't let me open it till Xmas, she wrapped them!! go figure. Anyway, so don't know what instructions came with them, but I'm gonna give it a go after both your comments. The only thing is the tuner part. Is this essential , or only if the bike is running hot and pipes popping?
I looked up some tuners on here, and seems as though the Thundermax is one of the best, and instructions on you tube seem pretty straight forward, but know stuff all about this sort of thing. The days when I worked on bikes and cars, they still had carbys and you just had to clean plugs and set the timing right.
Is it also necessary to change the air filter?

Also Hmmm, you are of course more than welcome to visit if you ever do make the trip.
We are hoping to get enough time off work together next year and hire a decent campervan and take turns riding and driving along the coast to Brisbane. Originally from Sydney and got relatives in Hervey Bay. Take a few weeks to get there and then just ship everything back, unless my arse holds out, then I might just take the bike back home through the Nullarbor.
    cheers

    G'day John

Just went out and had a look at my switchback and if you can swing a spanner you can do it yourself easy enough, the secret is taking your time.

As you said you have done a couple of older models and the only real difference would be the sensors.

I had a Nightstick slipon, heavy breather and a screamin eagle tuner put on mine before I picked it up.

I couldnt be bothered doing it myself this time, I still have my 1200 custom and I have changed the pipes on that 4 times and about to do it again when I get it back.

If you get stuck and need a hand shout out and we can arrange a time that suits.

yep, you will be able to do the pipes yourself john. piece of piss. after you fit the pipes do the tuner and a/c. well worth it mate. look at the power vision if you dont know much about tuning. very simple to flash a tune on your bike. like 5 mins tops. a/c are generally all the same & comes down to personal preference. personally i dont like the ones that you have to fuck around socks but each to their own.

good luck with it mate. as others have said, sing out if you have any dramas. plenty of blokes who will help you here.
