Shingles I had a defect for noise. Put the old pipes back on the bike got the defect removed and within 500m someone had moved over on me. She did not "see" me (or hear). Straight back home loud pipes and tune back on the bike never had a problem since.

You're right on the money Shingles. Too many bikes are too quiet these days, especially when when you get those boofheads cranking their Doof doof crap around town. I've been cut off a few too many times in the past by drivers pulling out of driveways or intersections not controlled by lights. "Be Heard to be Seen" is my motto, and stuff you to the EPA. The only time you hear a bike cop coming is when they've got their siren going.

I've posted this elswere but I think it will fit in this thread.

Just a quick thought, what do you notice first when  the Police,Ambulance or Fire Truck approches you the lights (high vis) or the Sirens (loud sound).

I don't know about anybody else but nine times out of ten I hear the "SIRENS" first.Think about that LAW makers when you pass laws to fine riders with loud exaust and want to bring in LAWS for ridres to be more VISABLE.

    cheers Rick

Couldn't agree more Shingles, I like to be heard before being seen when out riding,  as most motorist don't look for bikes PERIOD.

But there are a lot of riders out there that ride without consideration of thier own life and other road users, riding in blind spots of other motorcycles, car and trucks etc, going way too fast for conditions etc. Every bike I've ever owned I have fitted aftermarket pipes on so I could be heard, and also for fact that I love the sound.

But I am considerate of my nieghbours when riding home at 1am in the morning.

Thats why i posted this on 25 nov about noise and epa targeting us and no other barsteeds. The more noise we make to the pollies the better.  But what is the best way to go about it?

No bike should sound like a sewing machine - it's a fu@#ing Motorcycle for God's sake, so it should sound like one. However, there is a big difference between a "nice note" on a bike, and an OBNOXIOUS roar. It's the obnoxious roar that gets the attention of the boys in blue. And it seems the louder the bikes are, the more the rider wants to be heard.

Got pinged for speeding, The cop pointed out out that the bike was excessively noisy. Without being a smart arse, told him thats why I am still alive and not another road statistic, my mate got banged up when a car pulled out of a side street straight in front of him, resulting in an opened up knee and stitches to the face. Drivers excuse was, didn't see him. Copped the speeding fine on the chin, but have not heard anymore about the noise, that was 6 months ago.

There are cars , little jappa road bikes , road trail bikes , pushbikes with motors and my neighbors mower , chainsaw , compressor grinder and vaccume cleaner that are all noisier than my Roadie with V&H MO`s on it !
It`s a blattantly rediculous revenue raising legaslation to be used at any officers `personal discrepancy , is open to abuse and discrimination , that ultimately will and does put the lives of riders and other road users in more danger and nothing more !
The evidence is well known , they not only use noise as so that people are aware of emergency vehicles approaching but also are aware that electric cars and bikes are more dangerrous to handsfree headset , ear/headphone wearing pedestrians , due to the `lack of noise !

Got one in the mail today (EPA for noise) got directed into a road block on the 30th of Jan,

Drug, Alcohol, Licence, Rego and RW checks, 20 or so coppers standing around, Both sides of the road set up,

No discrimination to the harley riders (BULLSHIT)  No issue with Drugs and Alcohol, Licence and bike all good.

The Maggot acted interested in the bike asking questions and told me he also rides a bike ( BMW ) Two faced fuck.

Anyway look on the bright side, at least the real criminals were doing business as usual.

We just have to get used to the idea that someones eardrums are more important than someones life, yes I would hate to be deaf, but at least I am alive.

I have been riding with loud pipes for many years now during which time they have assisted in keeping me alive........ I still havn't gone deaf!

"The loud pipes save lives" slogan is a crock of shit, the Dopla effect combined with car noise insulations and their own music boxes in the vehicle, means drivers are unlikely to hear your loud pipes. Anyone relying on the volume of their pipes to save their lives is a fucking idiot. Personally I rely on a whole range of things to save my life, principally my own riding skills.

On the granny I have VH 2 into 1 The purpose being to improve engine performance which of course results in having loud exhaust noise. I took the system to Mega Cycles in Dandenong who rebuilt the original VH tail pipe to improve gas flow even better. During the process he made me a baffle insert which I have used for EPA tests (Paki Toggies hate me) and it reduces the noise to 94 decibels and allows me to regularly pass tests without removing the the system and replacing with the stock crap twin sysytem.

To avoid getting EPA'd the granny has a great music system and with the Ipod whenever I am approching a Toggie or other constabulary vehicle or person I just crank up the music which drowns out the pipes. When approaching a breath test I crank the music up then stop and turn the engine off, take the breath test, turn the music back on and then start the engine. The music at well over 100 decibels hides the exhaust noise until I get far enough away so I can turn it down.

"Loud pipes may save lives, but loud music won't get you EPA'd"
