    Hi All,

I was pinged recently (with a warning only) about my Screaming Eagle II Pipes.
It actually says on the pipes "Not fo Road Use" I assume in California maybe??

I have a Sound Level Meter Calibrated at a NATA approved Laboratory so decided to do my own Stationary Noise test.

I set the bike up on a concrete driveway, outdoors of an afternoon to reduce background noise and conducted a test using the positioning etc straight out of the Regs.
I ran three cycles at 2750 RPM.

I had three readings with the highest being 101.3 Pa (I had checked calibration prior to each seperate reading)

According to the Regs, as my bike is not specifically listed I cannot exceed 98 Pa.

I have pulled the SEII's apart and the baffle has no packing in it, however there is a perforated sleeve still in the Pipes that seems to have a packing material behind it but it is only about 5mm thick.

    My Questions.

    1. Does this seem right for the SEII exhaust or should there be a packing or tape over the baffle itself.
    2. Can I pack or tape the baffle to increase the noise insulation and therefore quieten the pipes.
    3. Do you think this would have a major effect on the tuning. (EFI).
    4. Has anyone done this before and if so what affect did it have on noise levels.

I know loud pipes save lives (I Agree) however I cant afford to keep putting $ into state coffers at $300 + per time so I am going to try and reduce mine to 98.5 Db and give myself a test report, see how that goes. At least then if they fine me I will fight it in court.

    Regards

    Nigel

from some of the different readings I have done some say use steel wool which makes sence to me,,and the same just wrap thin tire wire to hold it in place,I not long got S/E slip ones for my Softail as I wanted mellow and less attention,,,(boreing old prick) there is obviousely a difference bettwen the SE 11 which you have compared to my later ones,,,mine do not have anything stamped on them.

the people on HD USA forums certainly have a good play,,,pop in there and have a read,,,we quietend down my ladys Yamaharley 650 with Hard Core baffles from Smartparts which fitted ,,,well they were made for the V&Hines cruzers,,and to be honest I was impressed with how much they mellowed it down,,wether they make something for your SE I'm unsure. they do seem to cater for a lot though so maybe check there site out?if it makes it easy,,,I like it.

    cheers Jimmy

how much does it quieten it down daddy racer?

The material used to quiet a baffle as it comes from most shops is just a sheet of white material, which comes wrapped around half the baffle and is stuck on with tape. You don't throw this away, you just insert the whole thing (white material/tape/baffle) into the exhaust.

I'm only saying this because I've seen people throw it away  :)

    Hi All,
I have bought some of the white exhaust wrap from MCAS for $10.00.
Called into the local security screen door manafacturer and got some stainless security mesh for nix. He actually let me loose on his scrap bin.
Also grabbed some stainless wire from the hardware on my way home.

I have closed off the tongue on the baffle a tad, put down one layer of mesh which I wired on,
Then a layer of matting, then another longer piece of mesh. I pulled this tight with hose clamps then attached with twist wire.

I will be puttng back on tomorrow so see how I go. I will try and run another stationary noise test.
    Regards

    who the fucks daddy racer????

and as I read my quote on how much it quietened it down,,,I think I was a out a bit on 5 to 7 db...3 to 4db. I did some homework as I said I was considering Kerker/Supertrapp big 3. a full system side slash. they come back around the same area as V&Hines Bog Shot Staggered. and Smartparts made baffles for them.

Don't bank on smart partz baffles or big city thunder baffles significantly bringing your noise down. They take out some of the bark but not much else, certainly not getting you down close to EPA requirements. I know because I purchased and stuffed around with a lot of these overpriced baffles. If they were any good everyone would have bought them

I use a sound adjustable 2:1 pipe called a patriot defender. Can have bike as quiet as stock or loud as hell and adjust anywhere in between whilst on the move. I only putt it around in the quiet mode in and out of my neighbourhood so don't have to worry about choking my bike. Very happy with it

If your in Victoria, the limit for ANY after market muffler is 95 db. NO margin. Where as a standard system gets an allowance for wear etc. New Harleys can be 98.5 with standard pipes due to larger engines etc. The fine from the EPA is $704. Cost me $31.50 to test mine last week in Geelong. The guy was helpfull but was very informative. Id give the NSW EPA a call and ask local advice.
The cops in Vic are even sending test notices ( no fine just a trip to a listed tester) to brand new and standard bike. Just because they can.

    Well,
Had a go and couldnt get the baffle back in due to the thickness of the "baffle" material.
I have closed the tongue in the baffle a little more although doesnt seem to have made much different.
I will try again but probably with a fire rated fibreglass material. This is meant to have airflow through it.

The denseness of the "baffle" material from MCAS would reduce the airflow too much I think but the wire worked well in holding in place.
I will rewire but this time with Fibreglass and much thinner.

As for riding at 101.3 Db and getting pulled over, it has happened twice now both times when riding in a smallish (10-15 bikes) group.
I have not yet been booked but this increasing push by those enforcing the law to turn average law abiding M/Cycle riders into lawbreakers is a worrying trend.
I really cant afford a fine of $500 plus, when that could be better spent on the bike.

If I can work out how to do it when I run another test I will try and video it and upload the video so you can hear that this bike is not harsh or overly load.
