For me, Jimmy Page is God.

That said. In 1969 Jimi Hendrix was asked what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world. He replied "ask Rory Gallagher". (Note, at this time I believe RG had never even released an album)

Ireland you nailed it mate - Gary Moore probably one of the most underrated guitar talents ever, like the best of them (SRV, Jimi, even Tommy Bolin) taken early... Parisienne Walkways, live in Montreux 2010 is a Gazza classic, RIP mate.

Walter Trout and Julian Sas are also on my favorite playlists, with Luther Allison and Peter Green up there too - when I first heard Julian Sas I imagined him to be black, pretty cool bluesman for a white guy!

Definitely a fan of Roy's - Peter Green also needs an honourable mention, with the late great Luther Allison and Buddy Guy in there too.

All of the above! They are all amazing in their own right! One of the best concerts ever featuring a lot of the guys mentioned above was the concert for 'George Harrison', check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=rj4J6i_vw0w&NR=1

Anyone heard of this guy 'Johnny Hiland'? check him out, his legally blind and has got fingers the size of 'Salami's' yet he can still wail!

Joe Satriani is definitely in the hunt, can't believe nobodies mentioned Mark Knopfler. Or Steve Vai for that matter.

I guess it's just a matter of taste. Anyway, my favs are Jimmy Page and David Gilmour.

Man this is such a subjective topic! There will be so many varying opinions.

For me, it's Hendrix. Not because he was the best technically, but because of how he took the electric guitar to new levels in terms of what could be done with it. I'm sure he would have played a lot better if he wasn't constantly high as well.

    On the technical side, Page/Clapton.

This is a loaded question I have not seen one artist in the previous posts that I did not like. I was going to say that Peter Green was a glaring omission but then I seen one bloke mentioned him. It's all a matter of taste I guess, horses for courses. Music is like bikes, if it makes you smile, it's good.

Having said that though, listening to the brown bomber the first time was a life altering moment for me.
