My 2005 1200c Sportster has a bit of a tendency to stall on take up from stationary, which can be quite embarssing a traffic lights. It has Screaming Eagle slip ons & has the right jets in the carby to suit the pipes as far as I am aware. It has 22,000kms on the clock. The throttle cable is well adjusted & it is idling about right, as in not too slow. Has anyone got any ideas what may be the problem??
When cruising does the bike splutter or backfire at all?
I'd check that the air/fuel mix is set correctly. And I'd also check your plugs. Pull your plugs and see what colour they are. If they are at all black, your bike is running too rich. Also check plug gap, my manual says gap should be 1mm, you might want to double check for a 2005 sporty.
Running the idle air/fuel mix too rich or lean may cause your bike to stall when throttle is applied.
Bike runs very nicely when cruising. Pops & crackles a bit when going down through the gears engine braking! I think the plugs are good I set them a few thousand k's ago to what it says in the manual.
How do I adjust the idle air/fuel mix??
Best to check your service manual, it should detail the procedure in the carb section. Or see the procedure detailed on this page under the "Adjustment method". The page below also talks about re-jetting where they go through removing the carb, just ignore that bit.

That sounds like a good plan Kingchops I will have a look into the carby tune up kit!!
sounds like its lean m8, what pilot jet does it have in it now? the service manual won't tell you the right jets, different people jet different ways, not many tune those CV's right or know how to , but when they are tuned right they are a good carb & the 1200 will pull strong off the mark. what ignition do you have? as the Screamin eagle module has a different advance curve as well as rev limit, the different advance curve gives them a bit more responce or grunt down low too. also check the cross over pipe( thats the pipe that goes between the two head pipes just before the slip on's ) is sealing, as sometimes the seal in that burns out and they loose a little bit of grunt at very low revs ( read grunt as Torque )
My mechanic is a good harley mechanic at Bikeworx in Albury. I might take it to him aswell but I do like to do a bit of home mechanics. The company that sells carb tune kit does infer that it will give better power (10%) & better fuel economy due to better tuning outside the EPA standards. Might be just sales pitch??
