G 'day. I'm new here, so I might stuff this up!!

Got an 09 Ultra & the audio speakers seem to cut out for no apparent reason. Started out only occassionally, now doing it all the time.

Any pointers would be gratefully accepted as not sure where to start looking.

    Is all stock factory fit.

    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers

Is it two speakers or one?
Anyway, since its becomming more frequent (and presuming two speakers) I'd be thinking corrosion. Only way to do it is to trace the wires....pita.

    Sorry this is loooong....

Well you won't want to hear this but it could be the dreaded known issue with vibration killing the speaker circuit board in the radio. It usually starts with the speakers cutting out then gets worse and finally--no sound at all. A test for this is to listen to the radio through the headsets and see if it still cuts out. When mine failed completely I could still hear continuous sound normally but only throught the headsets.

Service Bulletin M1289 refers to this but the MoCo calls it "CD skip and other audio system concerns" (attempt at hiding the real issue). Seems that on some 09 and 10 model Ultras the front two handlebar fasteners may contact the bottom of the radio creating vibration induced shock to the speaker circuit board. There was no recall on this of course.

There are literally hundreds of reports of this issue, and when in warranty it was covered by the dealerships replacing the faulty radio with a radio from repaired stock on the shelf. Don't know if they did that here but they cetainly did in the USA.

If this is your problem the cure is to either buy another radio through Ebay for ~$350-$450 bucks and risk a problem with it, or send your radio to Iron Cross Audio who for $250 USD plus shipping will repair your radio with a strengthened speaker circuit board and also go through the complete radio including updating the system. http://www.ironcrossaudio.com/

You will know if the front handlebar fasteners have caused the problem as you will see vibe marks on the bottom of the radio. You can get the 'new' style fasteners that HD introduced late 2010/11 to fix the issue once and for all from a dealer. What they have done is to provide a short headed torx fastener instead of the OEM hex heads.

Your total cost will be shipping both ways (not cheap at ~$80 each way incl insurance) plus the $250 repair bill if this is indeed the problem. I hope it's speaker corrosion or some other cheaper fix.... good luck......

I sent mine to Iron Cross- fast turnaround, warranty, and lifetime repair discount if another fault occurs.

Forgot to say you can buy a new radio from HD Australia for ~$900! Mine failed 3 months after the warranty ran out.

    Thanks for the tips people.

The fairing is coming off first to check the wiring, then go from there.

    Cheers.

    OK
I was only trying to help the OP when the sweet putt putt statement came in on this thread. Big Red the email address you sent me does not work so there's five pages of my diagnostic manual floating around in cyberspace. Try sending your email via PM again.

I was advertising the new "take it outside" thread that KC has made. There is a round 1 and 2 and this had the makings of round 3. Dang. It's all good.
