I bought a set of original slip ons from Ebay. They arrived and were fitted this morning. I can believe how quiet it is. Just on the road test alone there was a very different leval of observation fow the cages. But my neighbors probably love me again. I hope to get tested on Monday. I may leave them on untill after the christmas blitz. That way at least i can get on the Geelong toy run and the ocean road a few times and test the water. Just imagine if they put the epa tester at the Queencliffe end. With only one tester in Geelong, it would be Easter before you could get an appointment.

3 or more EPA roadside test failures can lead to vehicle having Vin cancelled - never to be registered again so they told me.

Also continually getting a letter in the mail by being dobbed on can also lead to issues.

Don't know what would happen if someone would refuse the test?

Often wonderd about some sort of hidden kill switch so the bike can't be started? Being able to disable the key fob from transmitting on the later models could work?

All this EPA testing crap isnt new. I got done by a road side test over 10 years ago & the fine then was about $560 I think.

First time I ever swore at the cops. When I finished my rant about the value of the fine Mr EPA said "piss me off enough & I'll make sure this bike gets de-registered & never gets registered again.

Pretty sure the EPA"have powers to compel you to take the test and the cops would probably order it or arrest you.

Mine passed the test today with the new orriginal mufflers @ 90 dB. The total permissable for my 04 Dyna to pass was 95 dB and the sticker says 91.5 @ 2750rpm.

He had to draw a diagram on the compliance cert showing the exhaust configuration, including balance pipe and part numbers of the mufflers. I had to fax this to Melbourne and follow it up with a phone call to confirm delivery. This info is kept on file for future use.

Aparently new hogs get 98 dBs if fitted with STANDARD pipes and earlier one get a 5dB leeway to allow for wear and muffler differences. But, if you have ANY after market pipe, its 95 and NO allowance.

The tester also said the none of the screaming eagles pass.

I'll be leaving these pipes on for a few days till the xmas purge is over. But I will hang onto them for future use.

Hope I dont get pulled again. My dyna sounds like a lawnmower.

... i've been looking at Smartpartz HardKore baffles - they 'claim' a 6-12 dB reduction across the rev range.

    http://www.smartpartz.com

ordering a pair for my Screaming Eagles - will let y'all know how it goes ....

However if someone with V&H Short shots was to invest in some - that'd be real helpful - i'm considering putting these after the factory warranty runs out.

Smart parts baffles won't help you get to a roadworthy level of noise

Hey Vader how dya go with the smart parts baffles mate?, just ordered up a set from the US tonight for my V & H  short shorts, hoping they will reduce the noise at least enough so I don't get ringing in my ears every time I go for a spin!

riding up the coast today even other harley riders were giving me squinty looks... The short shots sure are loud that's for sure.....

Ah .... i've been a bit slack over the holiday period .... my bad ....

The baffles aren't here yet .... mainly because i haven't ordered them - need more info whether the SEII ones will fit the '07 and after SEs .....

You want to do a video - a before and after for the V&H Short Shots - and if you've got an iPhone - get the Decibel Meter app - its free....

While its not totally 'calibrated' and all - it'll give some sort of indication whether there IS an actual reduction in sound at different rpms ...

Looking forward to the vid, bro.....

Haha no worries, maybe I'll let you know if if mine turn up 1st then... Just hoping for at least a bit of DB reduction, and to be less of a police magnet.

I've read that the V & H 'quiet baffles' can be used with the smart partz ones with a bit of modding. Might have to try that if there still ear splitting..

I bought a set of smartpartz quiet baffles from Fatbat and fitted them to my softail with big radius and they do make a difference and its more about being quiet on idle and start up and for that i think they do a good job and if you open em up they still crack so if your in the city and not powering on it just may save you from being chatted. There is one point i noticed if you fit them straight in they do restrict the motor but as mine was due a dyno i fitted em and got it dynoed but i did ride it beforehandand it felt like it was running rich and sorta choofing along anyways overall very happy with but bear in mind you may need to tune or dyno your bike after fitment.

Same here fish, fitted some to my sporty with V & H short shots a week or so back... And was very pleased with the new rumble, rather than the ear piercing thunder they were before! They are still loud with the 'smartpartz' fitted,  but can be controlled if stealth mode is needed to get past highway cops etc...

Highly doubt if they would get past EPA tests though.

All of this is just plain harassment. It's time the cops did their job propperly and getting dangerous dickheads off our roads, and crims locked up instead of this money making bullshit.

I thought they also looked for a compliance stamp on the mufflers as well as conducting the noise test. It states noise levels at certain RPM and complies with Australia EPA standard bla bla bla......

Relatively late addition to this thread.

I have some US spec stock OEM mufflers for Softails for sale in the for sale section ( where else Duuh!)

They are louder than our stock Aussie mufflers , and have no catalytic converters in them.

They obviously have all that "road legal" shit embossed into them , albeit US legal. They will pass ANY roadside test, visual or noise.

We as standard in Australia get the most restrictive exhausts in the Harley world , even more than California FFsake !!

I was probably suckered but the dealer I bought my bike from but he told me that the Screaming Eagle slip ons that are on my bike came in just under the legal limit. I read in a former post that no SE slip ons are legal, does anyone know, these are not very noisy at all but definitely more than stock.

From previous post in 2009 re EPA etc

Had a set of SE slipons installed on my 08 Heritage about 500 k ago. Was told by the stealer at the time that they were not so loud as they would alert the boys in blue, but would fail if they got EPA tested.Got put through the ringer by the EPA at a police blitz tonight, so was a bit nervous. Was told it failed the stationary noise test by 1 db, but he was not going to defect it on that. 88 db at idle, and I suppose 95 db during the test (as the limit is 94 db I think). Suggested I have a recheck done in 12 months to see if it had got louder and take appropriate action if it had. The guy had called his mate over to hold the handheld tacho while he did the noise test. After the test he commented to his mate " and they were screaming eagles". I got the impression he expected them to fail big time. I've read somewhere that the new SE's are not as loud as the old ones
