Gearbox noise?

Mate's 86 softail is locking up the rear wheel intermittently, removed primary cover to check out the clutch and found the adjuster plate had 3 loose bolts creating a nasty looking warp in the Diaphragm spring. Anyway with the clutch basket off the locking up is obviously in the gearbox. Any ideas as to what it may be and best way to fix. It is the early 5 speed with the clutch going in through the top and not the side. Cheers Burnzi

there & adjustment screw & lockwasher on the right side of the box towards the front right hand side it's done in 3rd gear  check that 1st it's in the manual , but being older it could do with a re-fit out bearings etc

check that the dipstick isnt broken, i have seen people put it back in on the wrong side of the clutch cable and it snaps of and goes thru the gbox, im fixing one at the moment that some well known shop did. And i just spoke to another person today who has just done the same thing to his own bike!

Bernzi, if its locking up while being wheeled around, & its in nuetral, troubles in the box, it will need to be pulled out and taken apart to look inside, (after the oils drained) you'll see whats broke or jamming turning the main shaft through the gears , taking the top off exposes all the cogs.....

might have broken the return spring  & gone thru the box & made a mess does the lever have the return the the middle possie when you push it up & down if it is not returning it's a full rebuild to get to that spring as it's one of the last parts to come out of the g/box case

It will still go through all the gears (not riding it) will pull the box on the weekend, pull the top off and see whats happening.

Thanks again for all the responses, such a wealth of knowledge with all of ya's!

Will keep ya's posted as we go.

About mid last yr I put some redline in my gearbox to see if it would help a noise I had on my 07 FLHX & after a couple of mths it gave up the ghost & I had all the bearings replaced. Now I don't know if the redline helped it to go or it may have slowed it up but anyway I haven't gone back to redline as $2000 later was enough.

No I wasn't blaming the redline but it didn't help the noise any but due the the noise & the thinkness of the redline it may of helped it come sooner then later. I use mobile 1 in all 3 holes now as well I was using that b4 as well.
