Just released today is an ad available in TV ready form or radio, that counters the prevailing ‘blame the rider’ line used so widely by road safety agencies that fails to acknowledge the shared responsibility of road safety. Aimed fair and square at drivers, the 84% statistic is one that is sure to rock the dominant paradigm.

The ad is the product of a collaboration between Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, the Australian Riders’ Division of Motorcycling Australia and the Victorian Motorcycle Council.

    Please circulate widely.

Yeah - It's clever wording. "In 84% of fatalities where the driver turned into or in front of the rider" That is a clever, bordering on misleading statement.

I am a rider, and yes, I reckon most drivers don't give two rats about us. But on the same day I encounter those dickheads, I encounter a similar number of riders that just make me shake my head and ask myself how long do I think they will last.

The 84% they speak of is a small number of the entire motorcycle fatality list. There is just no escaping that nearly 75% of all accidents on bikes, are RIDER ERROR!!!

I hate to admit that, as I am a rider too! But they are the facts - Sad as it is. :(

Yeah, got to admit Mongrel, I ride a big bike in Sydney traffic everyday and usually do a bit of Lane Splitting even when the traffic is moving.
Always make sure I have the room and can only do it on some roads.
The thing is though, I think it through before I do it, most drivers dont though, last minute lane changing (Cause they wer'nt paying attention up ahead) is amazingly common.

Reminds me of the big campaign in the UK in the late 70's "Think once, think twice, think Bike"

    http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IYJYA0P5ls8

Ran for quite a while and really seemed to make a difference at the time. Thing is you need to continually push the message especially with new and foreign drivers. It's the only way of changing driver behaviour.
