does anyone know if you need a light attached to your licence plate if you change it to a side mount? i know the cops pin you for a vertical plate 3 points and fine but dont think they can with a horizontal attachment can they?

They'll ping you for a side-mounted plate in general if it doesn't still provide the visibility required according to the regs (45 degrees to each side, and 45 degrees from above, in NSW).

is it something that the coppers are out to get or will pin you for or isnt one of those rules that is a rule but rarely enforced.

I'd say that an illegally-mounted number plate is exactly the sort of thing they'll pull you over for. And having got you, that's when they'll then go looking for other things to defect you on. It's a very obvious defect issue, and you'd really be asking for it.

For a legal alternative to the stock mount, check out the plate holder that 883n Harley convert has on his bike - http://www.hdforums.com.au/Default.aspx?tabid=71&forumid=1&postid=108446&view=topic&tpage=57

Keep in mind that you won't need to worry about the rego sticker at all in NSW come January 1.

As for the side-mounted plates, this is courtesy of SA (from ADRs):

"Number plates are only required to be fitted to the rear of motorcycles and motorcycles fitted with a
sidecar. A number plate fitted to the rear of a motorcycle or motorcycle and sidecar must be
positioned so it is clearly visible at all angles. It is not acceptable to mount the number plate alongside
the rear wheel of the vehicle where it is obstructed by part of the motorcycle itself. A number plate
attached to the rear of a motorcycle or motorcycle and sidecar must be mounted so that the bottom
edge of the plate is at least 30cm above ground level."

I wouldn't do it, I was warned by people on here not to and I thought I would just give it a go and when I got busted I would change it to the rear. Bad mistake as not only did I get busted for that but they went to town and defected me for noise and made me get a full inspection for a engineers certificate , bloody hassle as i had to change pipes back to stock to pass then put the V & H back on. i asked him when he pulled me over " what have I done" he said "I have pulled you over for your illegal number plate" BUGGER.

Yeah I even think I like the look on the back better now anyway, I drilled straight into the fender and used some LED bolts looks good I recon.

I'm in Qld with a US side mount plate on a 48.
I have been pulled over many times for booze & drug tests and never had the plate mentioned.
One cop had a bitch about the rego sticker mounted on the front side of the plate wasn't facing the left, but not a thing about the plate.
It has a light and may just meet the Qld 45 degree rule as it is close to the rear of the bike.

That looks good man, good alternative to the side mount.  With those bolt lights, did you just splice into the existing light wiring?
