G'day l was wondering what micron oil filter is correct for dyna 2012 fat bob 103
thanks
What ever makes you happy with filter choice. there are good and bad, cheap and dear. It's the internals and design which makes a better filter. This is what i have found and know. A H-D filter would only bypass when the oil is cold and the viscosity is too high to go through the filter media. This is the design of a bypass filter, depending on the volume of flow which is determined by the revs, Its not a good idea to start a cold bike an fang it straight away anyway. Its better to warm a cold engine for a coupla minutes first, and then as heat increases the oil gets thinner and will flow as it should through the filter media. When cold anyway, it is not as if all of the oil is bypassing, it is still filtering and only a small amount if any would escape past the bypass plate that is determined by the spring pressure acting on it. It will do its job untill the filter media becomes blocked, but not after only a coupla thousand ks. That would mean your engine must be fugged to start with if you can block a filter in that short amount of time. Does that make sense? Ok, a 5 micron will trap more particles than a 10 micron, but do you know how much crap you would have to have in you motor to block a filter and accomplish this? Do yourself a favor and cut open your old filter next time you do an oil change. You will see how they work and see how the pleats inside trap any particles. The design of the H-D super premium filter also doesn't allow the unfiltered oil to pass the pleats and therefore minimises the chance to pick up particles an introduce them back into the motor like cheaper made filters with the traditional bypass design. I DO know however that the K&N filter has the bypass in the back of the filter so oil is free to go passed the pleats and pick up any stray particles as it may go through the bypass valve. Anyway it's your choice, I personally have used both and cut both filters apart to see the differences. Both have their merits and both are good filters IMO. I like the nut on the K&N but i also have a H-D filter remover. But i also think that better filtered oil with less contaminants has to win in the end. I hope helps someone.
picking up one of these today.
