Lowering a Softail using bolt kit???

    Hey fellow forum junkies.

Does anybody know a GOOD Harley mechanic who does cash work around the Wollongong / South Sydney area?

I want my Blackline lowered and i have the bolt kit that i purchased from the states. I know a guy who can install it for $100 cash but it is bullshit trying to get a hold of him as he is going through a divorce.

Harley dealerships want $250 to do it and for that price i would go with progressive but i just want to see how the bolt kit rides and if it's ok i'll keep it / if it sucks ass then i'll see what other options i have.

I want to watch it done - to improve my knowledge and i'm also told that you'll need a press, to compress the shocks.

Any suggestions or help would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks guys and ride safe.

Botle Jack, a 4wd, coupla piece of timber, bench with a vice and a coupla spanners and save yourself some coin and do it yourself

its really pretty easy just need to compress the spring canister enough to release circlip and you can remove the shock from the spring canister and then change the threaded rod from the shock

Mate i have all the gear - (the garage, the workbench, the vice, the jack, the tools) - but i lack the confidence!

This is my first Harley and considering what i paid for it i'm too scared to fuck it up.

If i knew what i was doing it'd be done but i want it done right. Sorry bud but i'll pussy out and let someone else do it, Haha.

Appreciate the help and the reply though. I'd love to man up and do it but i'd be doubting i did it right and it's worth piece of mind i think. That's why i want to watch what they do though. I'm pretty young and have a lot of learning to do so it'd be good to watch and grasp what's going on.

    Cheers champ!

How did you go at Wombat?

I only made it to Yass. I had a party to come back for so i couldn't stay.

    Thanks mate.

There's a good ride coming up soon. Starts at Champion Hotel in Fairy Meadow, down to Sussex Inlet and Back. It's coming up in about three weeks. There was 100+ blokes last year. It's a good local ride for spinal awareness. Rego cost is a $20 donation i think.

I'll let you know details if your keen when i have confirmation of a start time and definate date?

I dunno, just a general call. If someone calls me a champ it's a compliment - which was where i was going.

Sorry if it offended but it was meant to be a good thing. When i call someone champ i'm being nice.

Bud, champ, pal, mate, and i guess when i'm older - cobber and digger will be up there. Good old Aussie slang.

    Try http://www.softailloweringkit.com/

A mate of mine just purchased the kit it comes with 2 sizes of spacers ones that will lower your bike by 1 1/2" or 2"

Takes about 45min to install (we had a beer or two).....works a treat...

Cost him under $100.00 + a little freight.

    Cheers

Do you really want to lower it?

I like the look of a lowered bike and dislike the look of a gap in the clearance between the rear wheel and fender but.....

Softails already handle terribly with minimal cornering clearance to the road. Just look at scrapes exhaust, pegs, boards etc. It'll get worse when lowered. Also, sit on the bike and if you ever have a pillion have them sit on it too. Get somebody else to test your clearance. You'll be surprised how much the rear end drops with a bit of weight on the bike

Champ, (I also believe it's a term of endearment, unlike other angry folks), I agree lowering your bike will affect it's cornering as well as it's general ability to be used without scraping the hell out of it! I have a Deluxe and often scrape it; pisses me off actually.

Have lowering bolts in the shed, always wanted to do it but I enjoy corners too much.

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

I think i may leave it stock for now as i'm already pushing it not to drag the shit out of everything and i grit my teeth when i lay it into a tight corner.

Based on what i've heard and people are posting it is way more practical to leave it as-is.

Can always consider it at a later date anyway i guess?
