indicator controls

Are there any kits out there to change the controls so that you can control left/right indicators with your left hand as per the standard setup on other bikes? On the one hand, I'm still getting used to the HD setup, but on the other I really do prefer being able to control the indicators with my left hand (I keep inadvertently blipping the throttle when I bring my thumb up to hit the indicator).

I haven't seen anything yet, so I was hoping maybe someone around here could point me in the right direction? I like everything else about the Iron, but this is annoying.

Gday Pigiron, you raise an interesting subject. My previous bikes had the left and right indicator switch on the left-hand side. On my very first ride after buying my Nightster, I needed to change from left lane to right, and when I reached to click the right indicator with my thumb, I accidentally throttled-on and nearly threw myself off the back of the bike! The same thing happened some more times however hard I tried to remember!

Anyway, after a few thousand kays, I had forgotten about this probability.... as, without me realising it, the throttle cable must have slackened/stretched a bit.

That was until I had it serviced recently! Holy mackeral, Pigiron, I had to change lanes (again from left lane to right), soon after I rode out of the service shop and...... yes! Reaching for the indicator with my right thumb, I accidentally throttled-on again and frightened the bejesus out of myself!

I spoke to the mechanic about this tricky thing the next day and he was familiar with the hazard on HDs and BMWs. He offered to slacken the throttle cable so it had some slack, which avoids the problem.

I haven't got that done yet, but if I nearly throw myself off the back again, I reckon I will slack the throttle for sure. hehehe

This has happened to me a few times as well.  I've now gotten into the habbit of loosening my grip on the throttle when I change lanes.  I figure losing my acceleration is better than being kicked off the back of the bike!  Might try putting some slack into the throttle but would still prefer having both indicator buttons on the left side.

The Iron doesn't exactly have the power to throw you off the back, but it's still an annoying issue even so. Nice to know I'm not the only one! You'd think with all the customisation options available, there'd be one for this out there somewhere. It's not an urgent thing to do, but I'll keep looking, and if no one finds a solution in the interim, I'll post back with whatever if I find if something turns up.

In a rather pleasant coincidence, the bars in the top picture are almost exactly what I'd envisioned for the Iron. Nice to know someone else has the same idea, and the gear to make it happen!
