TTS - general q&a

Check your timing tables. At idle with the TTS your running on the Closed Throttle Spark table and as you move the throttle it switches to the Open throttle tables. If you have to big of a jump (up or down) between the two tables it maybe what your feeling.

Depending on your build that maybe a bit much. The low 20's is fine for a stock engine and/or exhaust adder. IF you've got compression and camshaft it will like a little less. Give it a try at about 18 - 20 range and make it switch over table to the same or close to it values.

As a general rule of thumb you want the least amount of timing to make the most amount of power. So this is always a case of less is more. On a dyno it's easier to see what the changes have gained or lost you but with that siad you decrease timing until you lose power then come back inbetween the last two values and call it a day. All engine will be different but typically below 50 kPa you can over advance and engine and it will still not ping. You will feel it getting more of a surge and unstable as you go to far. Above 50 kPa they will typically start to ping before you can go to far on the timing.

I've upgraded my top end to 107 and using s&s 585 cams. Initial map I used ran like a complete dog. So changed to another which was an improvement. Ran flight recorder for 1.5 hrs this morning but this couldn't be used for vtuning because silly me forgot to change the tables and settings you need to change first.

Flight recorder still worked well none the less and my mistake was probably a good thing as I had the cam settings set off the cam estimator and after I ran the cam test my intake open setting was wrong. So changed that cam setting to 3 as required and fired the bike up. The idle is much smoother but too late to take the bike out and see if it's improved the rough ride down low in the revs. Will test tomorrow and use flight recorder to do some vtuning.

My question for the clever tts users is:

My base map displacement is set at 107.1 Ci. When vtuning I'm betting I will max out my ve tables so in the vtune file I created and flashed to the bike, I increased displacement by 5% as suggested, to 113 Ci. Once I have finished collecting data and merge the vtune file data into my initial calibration, should I also be changing my initial calibration's displacement to 113 or leave it at 107. I was thinking 113 but wasn't certain. The manual doesn't say.

Please disregard my last question. A ridiculous question and I must have been tired. This arvo is a good time for vtuning. Having a break from stints right now. The new cam setting for ivo has worked a treat. Don't rely on the tts cam estimator - use the cam tuning test particularly if you are using bigger aftermarket cams!

Understand that the cam ESTIMATOR uses the values you input from the cam card. Those value typically are not correct but it's the best you/us have to work with. Running the test within DataMaster and Mastertune let's you really know where your engine is at.

Since upgrading my top end to 107 from 96 and adding cams, my bike initially stunk of fuel. The smell was so bad that cars driving behind me could smell it strongly. When doing the cam test using TTS in my garage, it nearly made me sick being in the garage (doors open) near the bike due to the fuel smell being so strong. Since changing the cam settings and vtuning a few times, the smell of fuel is not quite as bad but still noticeable, particualrly at idle to the extent that you can't be in the garage with the bike idling without feeling sick. The A/F table values are pretty much the same as the standard calibration from TTS for my bike when it was a 96 as are the other startup, idle and enrichment tables.

With the Vtunes I did, the VE tables results were a lot lower than I expected. I haven't got access to my MT8 files right now but I recall seeing many values around the 60 mark and displacement is set at 108 ci. I'll get some more details and post tonight from home. I haven't Vtuned much of the low or top ends but Vtuned and changed all of the midrange and thought the midrange would have smoothed out the top and bottom ends reasonably well via the table extend function. I am concerned that there is something wrong as the smell of fuel is concerning, as are the low VE table values, and additionally when riding out with a mate with a stock 103, my bike doesn't seem obviously more powerful than his.

Last night I changed the exhaust over from a Vance and Hines 2-2 system to a Supertrapp 2-1 system. I hadn't ridden the bike since the weekend but noticed when I pulled the rear header pipe out of the cylnder head, I got a strong smell of fuel again. This didn't happen with the front header pipe. I can't check the condition of the o2 sensors in the Vance and Hines pipe as they are stuck in the pipe.

I thought there could have been an exhaust leak so this morning after changing over to the new pipe I turned the bike over and it still stunk of fuel as much as before when idling. Does anybody have some ideas or things I should consider?

I can post up some TTS tables tonight if it helps. I'm hoping it's a simple tuning issue and not related to the engine build. Bike will probably go in for its first service and check over next week however the builder is not a tuner and has no in-house tuning capability.

    Thanks for any input.

    Hi,

    What your plugs look like?

Spray a little bit of wd40 on o2 sensor, leave overnight and get big shifter onto it,

Have you noticed drop in kms per tank? If plugs show really rich i would drop 5pts in VE table for rear cyclinder
    Thanks

    Hi,

Did you get a map from Mac and run it?
    Thanks

Thanks for input robots. When you say did I get a map off Mac do you mean mac from the USA forum? If so that's where I got it. Do you know him? What's your username on that site?

    Hi,

i would contact him outlining your issues and he will adjust map

Can you datalog with TTs? If so send him a log to have a look at as well

He tends to run on rich side with his maps IMO, not fuel table but more the VE tables,

    Thanks

Mac on the US HD forum sent me a SEPST cal for my 2013 CvO Breakout with 1800 pro upgrade kit

Very good of him. I'm on that site as gmeikle

Had it in 200 K's and it seems OK to date. Need to " go country" for a fuller test away from the fucking cameras

A forum member here in Oz had sent me one , but for a different exhaust , V&H slip-ons , and my bike has Freedom Performance true duals , quite different from the V&H slip ons that retain the stock headers and crossover pipe

I'm wishing I could "blend" the good points of both cals but I'm more of a "TTS guy" personally

Apologies for putting this reply in a TTS Q&A thread.

Greg, Mac is certainly a good helpful fella. Not sure what his background or employment is but he seems to help out a lot of people with tuning. Pretty good for a bloke on the other side of the world who will probably never meet any of us here and has nothing to gain from helping. He even sent me another tune with more conservative spark timing but the first one worked fine.

Robots, my concern is that the ve tables are largely corrected due to my vtuning. I know I've changed a lot of the ve tables with about 4hrs of vtuning and saw lots of cells turn pink and light shades of red for a big chunk of cells in the middle of the table.

Admittedly I haven't vtuned the idle from 800 rpm onwards yet. I can give that a try too but strongly considering starting from scratch using the cae176 calibration, increasing the displacement , entering the cam settings, increasing the spark timing as per mac's map (there was never an issue with detonation and his timing wasn't radical) and start vtuning it.

The fuel fumes are so strong I loathe doing the idle vtune

    Hi,

    I seen that post retroman,

Fatbat, i would go back to the original cal Mac provided, run it and see how you go and contact Mac with any questions, He not a big fan of the autotune, vtune systems

You had it up to 170-200km/hr?
    Thanks

Yeah ill send mac an email tonight.

I did runs up to about 160 kmh in fifth and sixth gears. Didn't see the need to go any faster as I never go faster anyway and bit a heap of cells with the technique I used. Not going near redline as I never do and the bike is still running in.

Thanks but I got that issue sorter by adjusting the warm up enrichment table and the ve tables.

    Next questions are:
The standard tts afr tables are set at 14.6 in the top left area. Would there be benefit to richening up the mix a little in the upper most couple of cells in the far left side column to help cool the bike down when idling in stop-start traffic? Or is the afr in these circumstances taken care of in another table?

What's involved in buying a license to use tts on a second bike?
