Just wondering if there is anyone out there that would be interested in a tank swap for my black 2012 48 for either the nightster or iron tank or any sportster tank bigger than the 48 and lives in victoria. I know its a long shot but thought id give it a try before considering ordering one from harley. Also could be open to someone that wants to buy it? Tanks in great condition.

 

 

 

 

i've got the same problem, want to keep my 4.5 gal, and get a 3.3 for looks. Before you drop 700 on one at the dealer, look at this.

you can get one from www.rustyscustoms.com.au for about 350 delivered. It's a raw tank, needs a pressure test, and maybe sealing inside ( POR15, or get a radiator mob to do it 4 u )

but you'll still come out ahead. I'm saving atm to do the same...

but by the time you spend the money on pressure test, sealing, painting etc how much are you actually saving do you think? and then there is also the other problem of are you better off spending another couple of hundred bucks and buy a something with a bit stronger brand name (aka Harley davidson) which you no won't be any problems with it. tough decision..

pressure testing - garbage bin of water, tape up the obvious holes, put in, look for bubbles. Cost, $0- 15
sealing - if no bubbles, i'd skip it, Harley do.
painting - I've had good success with automotive paint in rattle cans, this is my play tank, the original one is for impressing future buyers.

The tanks probably come from the same place, just one hasn't passed thru the Harley orifice to get to me. The one from harley is 700 bucks in primer only, you've still gotta paint it. Ideally i'd find one that someone has taken off, but they're as rare as rockinghorse shit.

48 tanks are 2.2 gallon. Less the pump. You've got about 100k before you start looking for a petrol station, or there abouts

The standard tank on the 48 (and 72) are not too practical for doing longer rides. I'm interested on how you go with your tank swap/ upgrade though. I'm keen on a 72 but the tank size is putting me off a little. A little over 100km per tank just wont cut it.  

I just ordered a new 48 over the weekend with an Iron tank on it. It was close to a grand extra for the different tank but i think thats money well spent considering you get 4.5 liters extra fuel., and a harley paint job.
