Stage 1 question

Hey guys. I'm looking at buying a new street bob... I know that these days the new bikes come running pretty lean from the factory to meet EPA requirements etc etc.

My question is - if I get the "Stage 1"  thing done when the bike is brand new does the "download" you get from the dealer solve the running lean problem? Or does it still leave your bike running very lean??? Just wondering if it's worth it. I dont have the cash to buy a tuning device at this stage, so was wondering about the dealer download...

    Cheers berms

Stage one, air cleaner, pipes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and the tuner, allows you to download and install an appropriate map then tune to run sweet.

Just By a TTS and use the basic Cal for a stocker this will sort your issue out and give you flexiabilty in the future

Fuck ya gonna spend 20+K on a bike whats another $400

and if you follow the instuctions ya will save ya stock Cal to put back for any warrenty issues

plus with a coupla Vtunes you will dial in the bike nicely

Hmm Can someone help me out here?? I have never heard of being able to "download" a map on to your ECM without having to buy the device!! They all get locked to the bike, so I don't know how they dealer reckons he can do that?

    Anyone??

Berms its a hit and miss as some bikes run good and some lean with a dealer download . A lot depends on what stg1 pipes and air cleaner your fitting on the superglide. If it runs lean with the stg1 download you can always restrict the air intake or fit the stock filter again until you get your tuner.
    Good luck

Check the color of the plugs like the old days when changing jets or you can hook up a AFR gauge to see whats happening. I'm glad you made your mind up to buy a tuner off the bat as you know its best to have it running right from new. Man you go through bikes fast Berms

Mate , unless things have changed very recently here in Australia you can't get a " one off Stage 1 " download.

You can and always could in the states but here the dealer always sold you a "race tuner"

I had the chance to look at Frasers "Digital tuner" in action in late 2008 and all of the Stage 1 Cals were " greyed out" for the Aussie market .

That was near 5 years ago , and maybe things have changed , but I don't think so !

OK, thanks for the info... In your opinon will running slip on mufflers without a tuner make the bike run leaner than it already comes from the factory??

A mate of mine bought a new 103 Ultra Limited in Florida when we were at Daytona bikeweek in March 2011. Bought it from Klockwerks, the bagger tuning experts in Dakota. They fitted up an air filter and their own slip-on mufflers, no tuner.

They quite clearly told him that it would still run at the factory settings for fuel/air as the O2 sensor system would adjust to suit. He did 10,000 miles across the states in the next 10 weeks then shipped the bike to Australia as a "grey import" . The bike ran fine all the way !!!

Then he rode Adelaide to Perth and only then did I fit up a TTS for him , and the bike is well faster now, as it also has 255 cams and a V&H 2:1:2 header system to shift the catalytic converter.

    Hey guys,

For the Pink Ribbon ride last Sunday I finally got around to fitting the Cycle Shack 4" Oval slip-ons on my 2012 Softail.

My god, what a difference. They sounded absolutely awesome to me. A guy started his V&H big radius equipped Fatbob next to me and I could still hear my bike! Bike seemed to rev out better but maybe that's just the noise/grin factor kicking in. Bonus was the missus thought they look noice :-)

Ok so they are decel popping like crazy and I already thought my bike was running lean so I took it pretty easy. I'm nervous to ride it much until I get a tuner - no air filter upgrade yet, as I know that a very lean engine can be a damaged engine pretty easily. I have thought of putting some chicken wire up the ends until I get a tuner to maybe proivide more back pressure..

I've noticed that Fuel Moto have a New Micro EFI Fuel Tuner by Dynojet (based on PC V) and they look pretty flexible and certainly cheap without all the options of the PV at about $200US and they will do a base tune for your current stage options as for all the other products they sell.

    The features are:
Real Time tuning with Injector control of +250% -100% fuel

Very small and easy to mount (1/3 smaller than a Dynojet PC-V)

Individual Cylinder tuning with 250 RPM map resolution, up to 600 available tuning points including decel and idle. The software allows you to easily pinpoint the specific area you want to adjust.

Stores three different maps which can be switched on the unit

Features easy to use software and Dynojet Power Commander V maps

Includes USB Cable, CD ROM Software, O2 sensor optimizers, and detailed instructions

Pre-programming available for your specific modifications

    QUESTIONS are:

    1) DO I need to do something very soon or risk damaging the engine?

    2)  Do you guys uses an oil cooler or is a decent tune good enough for engine temps?

    3) Has anyone used the micro version of the tuner and how has it worked?

    4) Should this be posted on the EFI thread?

I'm not looking at doing much past the A/C so I'm thinking this will do me for a year or 2 and still allow me to take a canned tune but still have th ability to learn about fine tuning. Getting a "best guess" tune from FuelMoto seems like a low risk start to tuning.

    Thoughts ?

     Thanks Hilly,

    I appreciate your candid view.

I've looked at the PV but saw this as a low cost option. I have read ALL of the TTS thread and at last there is a Softail 2012 version.

I'm computer savvy so dont mind that side of it but dont want to spend too much time on the 'puter and more on the sickle.

I also see that many guys here will provde help if im stuck on the TTS.

Seems that is where I need to go. Do they provide a base tune (best guess) on your current upgrades too?

    thanks again.

Hey there sorry to hijack the thread, but just read in the last post that a TTS2 tuner can be had for around $400.

If this is so, where can I get my hands on one, as i have been quoted about 3 to 4 times the price already mentioned by a bike shop here in Adelaide. This had kinda put me of going for a TTS Tuner, and had almost settled for a SE Tuner instead. I'd rather the TTS as from my understanding it can be removed in the case of purchasing another bike, where as the SE is locked to the bike for good.

I'm after one for my bike before it starts to get any warmer, so any help in sourcing a TTS for a 2006 Softail would be appreciated.

PM me if anyone is able to help, cheers, Ash.

I have been searching TTS Master tune on google, and have came across single bike tuners. What does this mean?
Can these tuners be used on other bikes if say down the track I ever purchase another Harley, and get rid of the current one?
Are there are other TTS tuners which can be used for multiple bikes? Thanks to Hilly for referring me to M&M Cycles.
Have many others dealt with them and what feedback can you share? Cheers

I recently purchased my TTS2 from M&M. Not only were they the least expensive retailer around anywhere, but their service was very impressive and efficient. I bought some other goodies from them due to their good pricing and service all round.

The single bike tune means that the TTS will lock to a single bike. The multiple bike package will lock to the number of bikes it is bought for. For example a two-bike tuner will lock to two bikes. This would be handy if you had two bikes, husband/wife combo or a good mate had a harley. Once the TTS is locked to its bike/s it cannot be used on another bike.  I asked these same questions myself as the Mastertune website didn't clearly explain this.
