Dyna Wide Glide vs Softail Standard

    Hi all

Newbie question here. I'm looking to buy my first HD sometime over the next few months and have pretty well come down to 2 bikes. The Wide Glide and the Softail Standard.

I really like the look of them both with the raked front forks and the 21" thin wheel on the front. Sort of hinting at Easyrider appearance.
What I can't see is the difference of $3,500 between the two bikes new. The most significant thing I can find is more ground clearance on the Softy (approx 60ml). Otherwise there doesn't seem to be much separating them.

Am I on the right track here by leaning (pardon the pun) towards the Wide Glide based on value for money or is that 60ml well worth the extra hootch?

    Cheers and thanks,
    Crookneez

PS: By the way, I'm riding a 150cc Scooter at the moment and can't get my open license for another 10 months.
I haven't ridden either of the HD's to see which I prefer, but I'm going through this exercise because I'm assuming I can tailor either to fit me comfortably.
I really want to buy my HD sometime early in the new year so I can get a bit of practice (not on roads) before I become legal.

Softies have longer wheelbase, are built more for comfortable cruising IMHO than dynas and they certainly vibrate less. Dynas handle better. Ride both when you can to make your own decision. The looks are a subject of taste

$3500 difference can buy alot of fuel,

or insurance for 6 or 7 years,

    or top notch safety gear,

    or performance upgrades,

    or bike bling,

or goin away exploring on your new freedom machine,

or sippin lattes showin off the good thing at a bikers cafe near you,

or some serious tatts if you like,

or a return ticket to Sturgis to see what the fuss is about,

or you can give it away to charity and feel good about your yourself,

or give it to the missus for silence money so you can go for a ride whenever you want.

    Get the picture?

It's your choice but both bikes are great and you will have just as much fun on either!

Softy wins it over looks in my book. Riding either would be fun....

    OK everyone, THANKS!

It seems Wideglide gets the nod, it's really what I expected except being a totally inexperienced rider, I have no idea how much difference an extra 60mm makes in ground clearance. (WG 100mm - Softail 159mm)
The hard cornering thing (for me) may not be too much of an issue because I'm an older bloke now and therefore more a cruiser than a speed freak. Sort of like a lover rather than a fighter .

Never been able to get my head around not seeing shocks and a swingarm on a bike that's not a rigid chopper, so the Wideglide wins hands down for me! But I'm biased.....

Like what's been said, try to ride both, or just buy what you like the look of better.

Dyna for Riders, Softie for Posers!!!!! (Ducks for cover.....)

Bottom line, buy what you like, not what everyone says! We're all biased one way or the other.

Fuck them both!  Buy yourself a Heritage custom & never look back, it ain't gonna cost you all that much more, & as a lay back cruiser, it's hard to beat! Remember what you buy mightr have to last you for decades to come. You only get what you pay for!

Crookneez, I have had softails since 1984 for no better reason than i just like them, As I allwyas liked the custom softail,(same thing as a standard), I had a spinal injury a while ago and what i did was install fl brackets and running boards cause the pegs made in to uncomfortable to ride, I did install the heal toe shifter but removed the heal shifter as I wasnt fond of it. My way of keeping the bike, looking after my back, And its comfortable as to ride. So i got the best of both worlds, So whatever you like, get it and you can allways change this or that to suit, but still keeping the bike profile that appeals to you. I took the view, that if your gunna spend 30,000 bucks or so, another grand or two is no big deal to get what you want.

     Thanks guys

Yeah, at my age I probably will only have one Harley so I don't want to compromise by buying something I don't really like the look of just because it's cheap. I'm old enough to remember Easy Rider and still haven't got that look out of my system it seems. I like the slim 21" front wheel and the wide rear and love the look of the chrome Reaper or Thunderstar wheels. I also MUST have V&H Big Radius pipes. I guess that's why I arrived at the FXDWG and Softie Standard. Aggghhhh... stop me!

    Cheers
