electrical issue i think ??

gday all, i have a 97 low rider, had it for about 11 months.  all been running fine until my ride this arvo when speedo got stuck at 45 kmh for a couple of minutes odometer went all funny (ie numbers werent at the correct reading and were a bit hyrogliphic and now no numbers come up)  and the flashers stopped cancelling,  the tacho however still seems to be working fine. im assuming because it all happened at once its an electircal issue...hopefully a fuse/relay!!!  couple of pages on the net said to clean the speedo sensor as that can fuzz up with metal filings, that done and still same problem. now i know everyones favourite past time is solving potential electrical issues so please dont everyone jump in over top of each other!!!

normally i would have no hesitation in taking my problems to a workshop that deals with harleys every day however the closest one to me at the moment is about 300 kms away.  i guess im hoping someone has had a similar issue before or knows the flasher cancelling/speedo is connected in the wiring diagram to cut down alot of my chasing time.  any help is apprecated

    cheers

    Darran

Can still manually cancel the indicators and they just dont auto cancel?

If so the hall effect sensor for the speedo pick up on the gearbox could quite possibly be the fault.

I had my speed and auto canceling indicators stop working because of this. A replacement sensor fixed it straight away.

yep bravo, can stil manually cancel, just not auto cancel. checked again this morning hoping something may have "reset" over night but still the same problem. speedo needle actually looks to be sitting on about 2-3 kmh and odometer doesnt have any numbers come up at all. like the LCD display has died.

It sounds like the gearbox hall effect sensor, i remember it was $90 from harley for a replacement.

check  charging output . because if it's too high it will shit electric parts no more than 15 volts hot @ 3,000 rpm

i had a similar problem on my 2001 Superglide, it turned out to be the regulator was at fault - $200 + for another 1 fitted.

reg is charging between 13.8 and 14.2 v.
not convinced its the hall effects (is this the speedo pick up) as i have no reading for the odometer, as in there are no numbers there whatsoever. speedo needle is at 2kmh

havent found it yet. reasonably confident its the speedo head itself. have sent it off to a guage shope to check. tried buying a new or 2nd hand one from a harley dismantler but dealing with them (american made cycles in particular) was like pulling teeth. when i get an answer fromthe guage shop ill post in here

its fixed....dont kno wwhat the problem was, assuming loose connection somewhere.
got the speedo back with no faults found and wasnt charged for checking it. plugged it in put it back together and it all worked....go figure

Chuck some electrical grease in the plug. While your at it do the rest of the bike as you may have more dry connections . My bike is 6 years old and all the electrical connections should be cleaned and serviced.
