Mileage on HD's

    Hi all

Not an owner yet but want one real bad. I'm 67yo and I've found a 2008 Softail with 19000 km on the clock. The bike is in mint condition with V&H pipes and a few extras (lowered and shiny bits).
The guy is asking $25k but I haven't negotiated yet. Does that sound OK? Is 19,000 km a lot for a Harley?
I won't be able to ride it for 12 months until I can get my open license.

    Thanks
    Crookneez

Can't comment on the value for money thing....but if you get that beauty any-time soon, good luck resisting the urge to take it out on the streets!!!

it is a nice looking bike with low kms but as others have said there are heaps of them just as good so resist the urge untill you find one you are happy with in all aspects.
Difficult I know with the first one to walk away and look again. funny thing is more often than not when you stop looking one pops up just how you want. As you said you have 12 mths to look. In that time you could also consider importing one at a much better price.

A few weeks back I purchased a 08 night train. Aussie model one owner with over $10,000 in extras. 5000 klm with history and I paid about the same.
    Good buys are out there.

I don't think the price is all that bad really! There is about 3 Grand just in the rims!!

If you can negotiate him down, then yeah I would.

The next question you need to ask... How many Kms do you yourself putting on it? If you said it was going to be your daily commuter, then maybe 19,000 is too many. If it's going to be a weekend warrior, then 19000 is not many. :) Do you know what I mean?

Have you considered a smaller, lighter bike? You might find a Softail too heavy for a first bike.
I dont believe the bike you've got your heart set on is worth 25 big ones. Spend 10 on a 1200 Sporty, you'll love it!

Don't be too hard on yourself, we all have to start somewhere. My first Harley was an 883R Sportster, and I loved it. Considering I had'nt ridden for fifteen years, it was a good start. I kept it a year and bought a Softail Deluxe. That was four years ago, and still having fun!!

    Step one: Go into dealer.
Step two: Ask to sit on the type of bike you want to buy.

Softail for sure and seeing its your first i would be going 2011 or better as they have the ABS brakes.

    That's a good point Camy....

Don't lean too far!! Remember - The larger Harleys like softails etc, don't handle like a sports bike, so just take it easy until you understand the bike before you go throwing it through the twisties.

Crook - Those Sportys look nice, but yeah man, the 8L tank is an issue. I reckon you would be lucky to get 180k out of it - well that's what early reviews have stated. :(

My trip into town is a 120km round trip - At that rate I would be topping up every day!! LOL!!
