just had my bike serviced, the Harley dealer has put in too much oil, nearly 1cm above the fill mark, will this do any damage and should I have some taken out?

Hmm... I am not an expert here, but seing how the oil tank is up high probably not. HOWEVER - The top oil mark is there for a reason.

I would firstly call the dealership and tell them, and then make steps to rectify it.

That said - Are you checking when warm and on the side stand?

I would assume that the oil pressure would be higher and thence put pressure on seals.

it wont make any diffrance to oil pressure ,but the volume in the tank yes as it may spew out when it is hot as the oil will expand . i normally fill mine so it is just under the line with the bike in a up right position allowing for it to expand a bit .

Thanks for all the advice, the money you pay for a service you think they would do it properly

Yep. Oil pressure should not be affected - but like said above, it might spew out.

Thinking someone else with no emotional connection to your bike, is going to make sure everything is done to a 100% quality is dangerous.

Same thing happened to me on my last service. The oil dipstick indicates full when the bike is cold on the side stand. My softail service manual says it should only be at this level when warm/hot. I am certain this overfilling has contributed to a larger amount of oil coming through my air cleaner's breather hoses. I am not very happy and will not be taking the bike to that shop anymore if they can't get an oil change right. Especially when they charged $220 for just the oil and filter change.   Had I known this I would have done it myself.

To drain a little bit of the oil easily and neatly, I'm going to get one of those long-skinny syringe-like things you can use to suck precise amounts of oil out the top of the filler neck. Hopefully supercheap or autobarn will sell it. I'll replace the air cleaner breather hoses and clamps too.

Softail service manual states when the oil filter is changed the bike will take up to 2.8 litres of oil.
