Odometer accuracy

    Hi all,

Newbie so go easy on stupid questions. I've just got my LE Open license in QLD and riding a beautiful new Sym VS150 scooter. (It may look to others like a scooter, but to me it's a Sporty in drag. )

Anyway, I keep checking out used HD's on eBay etc and notice some quite a few years old seem to have unusually low milage on them. I was looking at a 2007 Softail today with only 2,400 km on the clock. And that's not too unusual. Finding 3-4 year old HD's withy less than 2000 km isn't too hard either.

Hmmm! That's around 400km per year? Give me a break. I know some don't ride all that often but I can't help but think there might be a tad of skullduggery going on here. The fact that the bike's have a manual odometer means it's all too simple to rewind the milage and misrepresent the bike to an unsuspecting punter. I know none of you would consider such a thing but is it possible some deviate's might?

Set me straight here so that if I decide to go for a used bike I know what I'm getting.

    Cheers

Also... Bikes 2010 and back have the kms stored in the Speedo and not the ECU. So if the bike has a flash new speedo (like the one I installed) can have the incorrect milage

Eg: When ordeing a speedo I was asked how many Kms were on the bike. I told them the truth - about 4000k. However, I could have had 25,000km and told them 4000km. They didn't care. Then I upgraded to the new Speedo/Tach combo that downloads the Kms from the old speedo, and I reckon you could now use my old speedo that is still sitting on 4000km or thereabouts to program another Speedo/tach.

So... unless it has the stock speedo, if the Kms are really low, I would e suspicious. Look at the rest of the bike. Tyres, stone chips, etc, and you will know if the 2400kms is true or not. :)

    Good luck.

And a fact of life is that in the "old days" (non-digital speedos) a ton of people wound them back. As mentioned above, you're not completely safe with a modern speedo, but I'd bet 99% of the older bikes with low milage is total wank.
