I'd like to hear your comments on the difference between the 96 and 103 engines particularly Dyno figures.

I'm looking to buy a new bike before Christmas and I see a lot of price diffenence between the 96 and 103 engines, that's problem no 1 now I have to decide between the Deluxe and Heritage.  Which one is easier to strip down and be fitted with a 21 inch front wheel???.

My last bike was an 88 carbied Road King which was fun to ride but not super quick.

    Thanks

    Lowlife,

mate, a couple of answers for you. Having riden my mates 08 FB 96 Ci with 211's and PV1 and the usual intake and exhaust modes done it pulls hard and sounds a treat. He hasn't had it on a dyno.

My bike, 2012 103Ci Deluxe, all the usual intake and exhaust modes, 211's and SEPRT, setup by Frasers in Perth, runs a treat, will dyno it, but it's only done 1400 Kms.

I put cams and pipes on it at 900 odd kms, made an imediate difference, torque feels a massive difference, there not a fast bike as such, but from where it was before to now, it's a different animal, and leaves my mates 08FB for dead.

I'm still to take it above the high 4000 rpm range. Will drop Syn oil in next week when first service is up, and that will also help. At about 3000 Kms I intend to dyno, but with all the bikes and race work Fraseers do over here, I'm not to sure it really needs it.

Steve (HD Tech) at Frasers set the tune and I have no flat spotting nor decel back firing, the headers have some of the usual discolouration about 6 inchs from the header, but that can't be easliy seen due to the shields. I have no issues with it running lean, fuel consumption has increased as expected nad it runs a tad rich, which was to be expected as well, but nothing over the top. The standard pipes also blued to about 1/4 of the length of the main header.

If you want a FAST bike, buy a Vrod. or go buy a sports bike, if your happy with a cruiser and you seem to be looking in the right area, I for one couldn't go past the Deluxe, for me it just looks better alround. But if you want the bags - screen and buckles in the leather, go the Heritage. I went for a run last week up the coast with some mates, different range of HD's, two worked Rods, and no chance of keeping up with them, different animal all together, but some Bobs with 14K rufly, and kept up with them no problems, both the Bobs have the same cam and engine confirguration as me, just short shots on one and  Bazzinis (I think thats how it's spelt) on the other. Some customs too, no sweet.

The dyno figures you see will be some what subjective to type of dyno - tuner (Especially their skill level) tyre size, bikes overal gearing and so on.

    Hope this helps some what.

    Just my experience....

I have a 96Ci 2010 Fatboy with the usual air mod and pipes tuned with a TTS. I recently stuck a set of Andrews 57h cams in it, and like Roosta said above, it's a completely different animal. The bike pulls hard as now and going around the cagers on the hwy is a twist of the wrist and hang on!! :)

Like above though, you are never going to get that "out of the blocks" blistering speed - unless you spend a fortune on upgrades, so yeah, you would be better off buying a Vrod.

I am stoked at the change with just cams - but then I weigh 70kg wringing wet. LOL!! :)

Thanks Roosta, The Deluxe with a slightly modified 96 is the favourite because it's within my budget.   I'ld love a V Rod but it's an easy bike to ride fast and I've lost my licence too many times already.

    No worries LL,

I consider myself fortunate to have been involved in the Mining Industry now for tooooo many years, so I was able to afford my mid life crisis.

You can't go wrong on a softy, they are designed to perform a set task, and they do it with ease.

The 96Ci is a grand engine, the 103Ci, from memory only had 2 Hp more over the 96, but get them, either of them breathing, and they are a whole different animal.

    Enjoy.

i'll leave it to the experts as to the difference between a 96 and 103 in the softtail range .. but it cant be that much that you wouldnt enjoy either.

But as an aside i would hazard a guess that the 96 motor in the touring and dyna range will pull similiar  to the 103 in the softtails

as for what would be easier to fit a 21 inch I would have thought they are pretty much identical front ends to work on .

    enjoy the shopping
