    how not do a rwc

On Tuesday the 8th of May 2012 I took my FXR Harley Davidson Motorbike to a Bike Shop  for the purposes of a roadworthy. My bike is a 1990 model, with a clean and well maintained engine; the bike has been fully serviced and had no mechanical problems what so ever
I rode the motorbike to the business at approximately 11:30 am. On arrival service manager  who I made the booking with commented that my bike was very clean and looked to be in great condition, he told me the testing would take about two hours and would involve testing lights, indicators, test engine noise. At no time was I told the bike would be ridden on the road.
On returning to the premises at 2pm I saw my motorbike standing over a pile of oily rags, and saw that the engine  exhaust, and even the seat was covered in oil. Obviously I was shocked and was very upset when  told me  service manger  that the crank cover had mysteriously developed a hair line fracture, whilst been ridden around the block by their mechanic, . They have been unable to give a satisfactory explanation as to why this has occurred, but had already quoted on repair totalling over three thousand dollars. I told them that this was out of the question and that I require my bike to be returned in the condition I left it. At this time I was told that the mechanic was following routine procedures and had at no time caused this damage service  manger  assured me that the ride was always under 60Kilometers per hour (for any bike), and that my bike had not been ridden hard and specifically had not gone on the highway or over the 60Km  limit. My bike can now not be ridden, and I have had to leave it at your workshop picked up in the same condition I left it has stated that the Mechanic feels guilty and is sorry for what has occurred, for my own safeguards I have recorded the phone conversations . Another Dealer have stated that if such an event occurred whilst a bike was under their care that they would repair the bike at their cost. I have sought advice from and Consumer affairs Victoria and they have stated that I am within my rights.
At this time 12/05/2012  the owner of the shop this took the  responsibly what had happened
The owner of the shop said the send bottom engine case had to send back to the usa for new one but would take 3 months or so
Said it fix the engine at their cost not cost to mine?
turn it off then rolled it down the hill to my house
When l  got home rang   service manger  again telling some think not write with the bike he said get the bike there in lilydale and fixs it no worrys its under warranty still you have only pick it up under hour ago this was 2.30pm the same day
So got RACV TO PUT IT ON FLAT BED TOW TRUCK AND RELIVER IT THERE too there work shop at  the cost to me
rang me telling that of the bike shop would not fix the bike under the work shop Warranty
because  service manger  of the parts that supplid by harley davidson to  me and fitted by the shop and payed by me in  good faith
fitted  there mechanic that he know want he was doing?
known the shop how to my harley 1990 fxr put it back to get ther and would all test on the engine before billing me
l rang Another dealer and want could of happend he said did thay do swinch test on before putting it back gether? Another Dealer have stated that if such an event occurred a bike was under work shop Warranty that they would repair the bike at their cost. There warranty on full engine rebuild is six months
l all so rang another dealer and he said you have do swinch test on before putting the motor back gether its standard with rebuild hes rebuilding motors 15 years
we allways do it because dont want coming back under warranty you do it right way the first time whats want your paying formechanic labour at $100 hour
but no real help because there  not harley dealer? Or  not an Authorised Harley-Davidson workshop.   For the purposes of a  roadworthy only
so l rang asked service manger him did they do squinch test on before putting it back gether?  he  said no you did not ask for it  to done
I rang service manger how now been sacked and owner to tell them I would not paying for these repairs again of the bike
l have payed out all ready Total cost to me so far is$1.504.00  another parts oil
Now l have be told by owner  you  have no choice but to fix it ]
     ]
I have sought advice from and Consumer affairs Victoria and they have stated that I am within my rights
hope to work out away to get it fix without going to court
allways had it  serviced  by  Authorised Harley-Davidson workshop' an the bike has been  dream  ride

this what they done in 10k  joy  ride to my bike  by  none  Authorised Harley-Davidson workshop'

the bike was dipping in oil  all over it

then l was told lucky the mechanic  did not get killed  on test  ride or drop it

so did he ride back to shop  leaking oil all over the road and him anorther   for two kilometers back to shop....wtf..

two days before the r.w.c down by the beach never leaket oil before

rider wants to ride he,s bike  to next   hog  meeting

    Hi there

Right or wrong, weakness in the crankcase being a a known fact: the people at First Class Motorcycles should have been more responsive and helpful with your problem. And with all your further problems just sounds like a dodgy operation to me.

And correct me if I'm way off the mark here. I've had a couple of RWC's done on 2 different year, make and model harleys and NEVER has the bike been ridden as part of the RWC??? Is this standard procedure? Off topic I know but it does surprise me.

Take mine to a local Garage for a pink slip.

He's never ridden it, takes five minutes.

The road test part of a roadworthy test session does not apply to motorbikes only to cars.

I run my own car repair business and do car and bike roadworthys, I will ride the bike to the road way to test the brakes, about 50 metres, and it takes no time at all to do one, the worst are the Jappers, that you have to take half the fairings off to check engine numbers. With the damage to your engine, there was a chance the engine was going to fail on Tues 8th May regardless of who was riding it, however, If it was me that had the bike and it happened while I had it, I would feel obligated to repair it at my cost, that's why I have insurance. My excess is very low so to keep good relations with the customer I would make it a priority and get your bike fixed regardless of weak cases or some other hidden defect. 38 years in the trade I do all my own work on my Harleys but not bottom end work, but in your case the bike would be sent to a dealer or specialist so full warranty would apply.... That's just how I work.

hi looking @ where that crack is  it could be a very loose rear engine mounting bolt's , as the 1988 to 1991 / 2 models  do or can crack behind the lifter blocks on the right hand side of the engine  i have repaired  a few of these but never seen one crack that bad  when i service a bike i check all  engine mounting bolts & g/box bolts  that i can get too before i take them off the stand .on every bike no matter what model , if you have not check any engine & g/box  mounting bolts on a reg or where you have the bike serviced  i would not be up for it on a older bike that is not  been keep up too spec , i am not standing up   for any workshop here  @ all , it's just you can not do a heap of miles on & older model & not have the spanners out on a reg time frame , them FXR motors  shake a lot in the frame & need to be tighten,   they only have 2  x  3/8" bolts holding the engine in place  @ the rear mount . but on the other hand it sounds like the bloke was running & delivery somewhere  using your bike  or going to his girlfriends place for a quickie @ lunch time  & had to be back in a hurry,   why else would you ride a bike that far for on  pink slip ,  i have never let anyone ride my bike i do not care who they are .     did you note the klm's reading before you dropped the bike off ?
