Too old for a Harley?

     Hi all,

    Newbie alert here, Sorry.

I know it sounds idylic but I've always dreamed of riding a Harley on a winding country road on a beautiful Sunday arvo in summer.

Anyway, I never really got around to it but last week I took the first tentative steps and invested in a 150cc Scooter (he he... I hear the chuckles from here). So now I'm the proud holder of an LE A license in QLD. Now my goal was to ride the scooter for the 12 months then apply for an open licence and (maybe) buy myself a Harley. Problem is, I'm almost 68 years old and by the time I'm eligible for an open license I'll be 69. So my question is... at what age is one too old to get involved in riding one of these beautiful beasts? I sort of feel a tad foolish at my age.

    Cheers all,
    Crookneez

Reckon it's the perfect age mate. Get a gnarly grey beard going, and enjoy being a bit foolish.

I'm not as old as you but I am a Ulysses member and I have been for more than a decade. I've met a fair number of people in their 70's and a few in their 80's still riding bikes and having a ball. So... if you want to ride don't let your age stop you.

Jeezuz crookkneez, if ya got ya blah blah what ever it is license then ya can't be that close ta loosin ya marbles.

Get on a real machine as soon as ya can Man,,, you'll find that it's more like therapy instead of ridin.

At 69 you're no where beyond it unless ya got somethin wrong with ya that ya not tellin us.

Take a look around and see how many fine young middle aged folk are riding,,, you will find that you're not alone Man.

    Go crookneez.

By the way, the vibes are great for circulation and crook knees !

Thanks guys. I forgot to add to my original post that I just can't tear myself away from my little Sym VS 150. I find excuses to go up to the shops (or anywhere) and I ALWAYS take the long way home. In fact yesterday the long way home was 112 km. Wifey thought I'd buggered off.

There you go see, any excuse for a ride and it doesn't matter what its on. If i was you i would learn to ride a geared bike ASAP and get ya Harley ASAP too. I mean who will pull you over and ask if you have a licence for that. Like Nike say........just do it!

The next step up from your auto scooter is an 883 sporty. They are light and easy to handle, and when you are used to them you can get a real mans bike.= (anything bigger than an 883)

Hell, at 69 I'd go straight to the showroom, tell the salesman I ain't taking his shit, buy the bike I wanted and ride out of there, license or no license.

Any highway patrol pull me over, I'd look over my horn rimmed aviators and use the old "Son, I'm old enough to be your grandpa, I was driving while you were taking shits in your nappy, and you really want to see my license?"

As Billy Conolley once said, You can't stop getting old but who says you have to grow up?

One of the boys at work has been on the Grey Ghost scene for a few years now, he works for about 3 months a year and jumps on his Lead Wing with his wife and they head off into the sunsets, Tony's over 70, still going strong. As long as the heart - head and legs are in it, why the hell not.

just beware, these aren't the lightest of bikes on the road. The trike might be a great way to go, and mum can sit on the back and enjoy the ride too.
