FI management systems, anyone had experience with them?

My next mod is to put on my Screamin Eagle high flow air filter but I wasn't sure whether or not I needed a fuel management system because I've already got hight flow pipes.  So I did a test run after I put the SE pipes on with the SE air cleaner and the bike definately didn't run too good.  So I'm pretty well convinced I need an FI manager.  From what I've read the Vance & Hines fuel pak sounds good.  Just wondering if anyone else had modded the FI system?

I have both pipes and air cleaner(filter) fitted and did not require any fuel managment system.

"Firstly, Harley-Davidson themselves claim you can change the mufflers and air cleaner and the stock ECU will 'learn' the difference and adjust accordingly. The oxygen sensors in the pipes allow it to do this, something that previous models did not have."

Above quote taken from tech section of HD Magazine.

    I know mine adapted.

I only tried my AC with the Cycle Shacks, might try it again now that I've got the SE SP's on. I was told the same by the dealer but first time round when I tried it, it definately sounded sick.

Give it a go mate, nothing to lose. Let us know.

The standard Harley ECM has very little ability to adjust its output ,it really at least requires a download from Harley to reflash the chip or better still add something like a fuelpak or better still a pc111 or Thundermax or SERT the Thundermax has the added advantage of cominh with wideband 02 sensorsfor a large range of adjustability over and above the standard narrow band 02 sensors.

That is the main reason that I haven't replaced my airfilter as yet with something that flows more freely,as it runs lean enough now,and I haven't decided which way I am going with my fuel processor?

The download was an option that I thought might suit me because I only plan on doing the AC after doing my pipes but when I was at Peter Stevens last they didn't seem to know anything about it.  Interesting because at US dealers it's standard practice.

That is correct,it is called the stage 1 download, but then again nothing surprises me about what dealers do or don't know here

Kingchops, did the cycle shack pipes you used have the oxy sensor sockets in them?. If the oxy sensors are dissconnected the bike will run rough on idle. Ive heard claims that the stock ECMs have a 12 per cent variant but im not convinced. If you put the standard header pipes back on and use the se slip ons this will rectify the prob. However on the big twins weve used the power commander 111 units and have had great results with some slight changes of the given maps. You can also have the dealer reflash the ECM but just bear in mind that if you intend to do any upgrades or change pipes then its back to the dealer for another flash which always means $$$$$. Thundermax or daytona wide band mangement systems are the ultimate way to fly but are much more expensive.

    Big Joe,

Yes, the Cycle Shacks that I used were the slip-ons, so I still had the O2 sensor on the header pipes. My O2 sensors seem to work well because I notice them re-adjusting when the bike winds down, when I stop at the lights for example. I'm pretty certain I'll need a fuel tuner, for me I think the V&H fuelpak would be good because like you mention I'm not thinking of doing any engine mods beyond that and I can get it delivered for around $250AU.

Not sure where you're located but do you know of any AU dealers that do the ECM remap, because I asked Peter Stevens service department in Adelaide and they didn't seem to know what I was on about?

How does adding an aftermarket fuel control system affect Warranty? I was under the impression that it would void the manufactures warranty.

To me it is something that I would consider after the  warranty has expired. At least you have two years for any problem to arrise and be sorted by HD. There has already been talk on this forum of '07 bikes having a noisy fifth gear, running too lean, clunking on start up etc, etc.

kingchop im in wollongong and the dealers here have reflashed ECMs. i know that they can put a download to make the bike run a litle richer to eliminate the excessive heat they give off in stock form. The $250 is quite an inexpensive upgrade to the fuel system but remember that thats what it is, a fuel management upgrade.

Greg ive spoken to the dealer here about warranty and how its effected by any upgrades. they actually also sell and fit aftermarket efi back up units and tell me that if a problem arises not related to or proved to not to be caused by the upgrade then the warranty will not be void. having said this though i would check with your local dealer to see if they have the same policy.
Ive posted some minor probs weve had with the 07 in another section of the forum.
    Hope this helps.

    My expereince

Got a stage 1 download with SE HF Air filter and SE 2 slip ons. THe bike ran lean as hell, popping and backfiring etc.

Wen't back to the stealer, and turned out they had loaded in the wrong download (they downloaded the street legal which was garbage).

    At that point I did two things;

    1. Never went back to that dealer again, as they made a mistake but then were a$$holes about it

    2. Bought a PCIII and got it dyno tuned.

is there something wrong with the harley engine managment system ?or is every one changing them over for performance? it seems alot of people are fitting them to there bikes.

    Jim,

It's more for performance if you bike is stock or if you only fit mufflers then you don't need an FI tuner.  I've been told that the stock FI system adjusts 30% for changes in the exhaust/intake, if you go outside of that by say fitting both hi-flow mufflers and air cleaner then you need an manually adjustable FI tuner.

Dazza - interesting about the race tuner, I will take a look at that site.

Looks like most of us are or are considering the changes mentioned. My understanding of intake and output (Air) is, the more that goes in the more that comes out. With the higher air to fuel ratio some adjustment is needed as engine will run leaner. All 07 bikes are set fairly lean at the factory to placate the stringent EpA emmission controls. So, an exhaust that sounds like a fart in a bottle (EPA Noise), and a reasonably restricted intake to curb inlet noise leaves us all chomping at the bit to get our bikes to sound and perform as they should.  As someone once said, Äfter spending so much money on a wonderful machine, why wouldn't you get it dyno'd to make it run just right"  I would have to agree that a change of mufflers shouldn't do jack (On a negative side) to our machines. Throw in a high flow air filter and............ get it dyno'd. If that means purchasing a PCIII or whatever, so be it. Personally i don't know enough about EFI and tuning of HD systems (Read i don't have a dyno) to trust myself having a go at it. I'll work another 300 years, sell my teeth (Shit i haven't got any, that was another life), sell my wife (Nah to ugly.... save on food though!! gone) and get her dyno'd . Anyway, late night rave. Team got up, yes. and it's after midnight (Poor old fart can't cop it anymore)

Shiney side up guys & girls.

I ended up with the Vance & Hines fuelpak, I've had it fitted for about a week now, I'm really happy with it, bike runs great and it was easy to set up.

I changed both the air filter and fitted Supertrapp mufflers. I then fitted a Thundermax with auto tune which was very easy to fit and have now done about 2000K's and I am very happy with it. I was told by my dealer that I didn't have to but it would be better if I did and as I have said I am very happy with the results...
