Shocky torque settings

I've just received my Burley Slammer shocks and intructions say 35ft/lbs on top and bottom bolt, but I've seen and heard elsewhere 55 top and 45 bottom. I'm installing on a 2012 Iron.

I reckon I'll follow their instructions but was just wondering what others have done and if anyone knows what the Harley manual says.

I still need to decide whether to buy a cheap torque wrench or just let the shop do it. I'll need to take it in soon anyway as my regulator is on the recall list. But it's always more satisfying doing the work yourself.

    Cheers.

G'day, The HD Service Manual , section 2.24 (2012) states torque settings for rear shocks (all models) as 45-50 ft-lbs (61-68 Nm) for both top and bottom.  It says to remove bottom screw first then top, installation is done by assembling the stack (damper rubber etc) on the top screw first then the bottom.  Before tighening, it says then to remove the upper and put 2-3 drops of Loctite 243.  Simple as....

Personally i'd put a bit of Loctite on both and if you haven't got a torque wrench, it would be well worth buying.  I got my years ago and it's been very handy, takes the guesswork out of tightening nuts etc.  Sometimes though it's easier to go by feel.

It's worth doing yourself, that way you know how well the job was completed!

    Cheers

    Thanks IE. Appreciate the info.

I was gonna borrow a TW from work but it seems someone already has, and it's sitting at his home. Time to invest in a new tool.

    Cheers.

Just tighten them up, I used to spend countless hours fucking around with a torque wrench but realistically....................a little locktite and fasten it down hard, it aint going anywhere!

I'm more concerned that I might overdo it and strip the thread. Got the work TW in the end.

    Cheers.

Put the Burly Slammers on today. Gotta say, the bike's profile now looks way better.

I didn't think I needed the spacers as everything seemed clear, albeit very close. However, after taking it out for a test run, the top cap is hard up against the fender strut on both sides. It's gouging the metal slightly but I reckon it will wear itself in after enough k's.

In hindsight I prolly shoulda used the spacers but don't wanna go through getting it up on blocks again to pull it all down. Shall see how it wears.

Oh, BTW. I looked at the shocks through clearer eyes and decided the spacers had to go on.

Didn't go so well second time around. I'll spare you the details but let's just say, I can now recommend and excellent thread repair service in the Brissy area.

    All good now.

    Cheers.
